Strategies To Help You Win More Money At The Blackjack Table

By:Alvin Nedrow

Blackjack is one of, if not the most popular games in the casino. Why do people like playing blackjack so much? Probably the main reason people like blackjack is that it is not only a game of luck, but it is a game that people can be more successful at if they utilize proven strategies.

Improve Your Odds Of Winning

People who take the time to research and learn the strategies that work in black jack understand that they can improve their odds of winning. Blackjack offers the best odds of any game in the casino. One reason that black jack offers the best odds is that you can control, to a degree, the outcome. Think about this, if you were to play roulette for example, you have no control whatsoever regarding where the ball will land. Roulette, no matter what a few people may claim, is 100% a game of chance. Blackjack on the other hand allows the player to affect the outcome to their own advantage.

The most basic strategy when playing blackjack online or in real life is that you should follow the same rules as the "house", or the casino. What I mean by this is that if the casino hits on a soft 17, then you should too. If the casino will stay on a hard 17, and you should too. In case you are not familiar with what a "soft" and "hard" 17 is, let me explain. A soft 17 is when there is an ace involved, remember that in blackjack an ace can be counted as 1 or 11. So if the dealer has an ace and a 6, then it is a "soft" 17 because it could also be counted as a 7 (ace+6=17 and ace+6=7). The dealer can take another card and if that card is a 10, then the dealer would have a hard 17 (ace+6+10=17).

Of course the same is true for players as well. When a dealer is required to hit a soft 17, it hurts your odds of winning because it gives the dealer the chance to get a 2, 3, or 4 and thus improving his or her hand, so instead of needing to beat a 17 you would have to beat a19, 20, or 21. Casinos are run by very smart people who do as much as possible to maximize their revenue. The reason that they stay on a hard 17 is that the odds of bettering that hand are very low.

You can learn the basic strategies of playing online blackjack, or real life blackjack quite easily. There is one basic guide that tells you which hands you should hit on, dependent upon what the dealer is displaying as his or her up card. The guide is the same no matter where you look and was created by a statistical expert years ago. This guide should be followed to the letter, if you want the best possible odds of winning at blackjack.

Maximize Your Winnings

Once you have learned the basics of blackjack rules and strategies, you can start working on learning the best betting strategies to maximize your winnings.

There are people who utilize card counting as a way to know when to bet big. Counting cards will get you banned from a brick and mortar casino and is quite difficult if not impossible for most. Counting cards is not technically illegal, but since casinos have the right to refuse service just like any other business, they will ask you to leave if they catch you doing it and will not allow you back into their casino.

Counting cards is extremely difficult. Most people are simply unable to keep up with the count, and it is not a recommended strategy.

A better strategy is to gradually increase the amount of your bet as you play, if you are winning. For example, if you start out with a $5 bet and win, take that $5 that you won and stack it on top of the $5 you already had out there. Now you have a $10 bet, assuming you win that hand, take $5 of your $10 winning to keep, and put the other $5 on top your bet so that for the next hand you will have a $15 bet. At this point you are completely even, and you still have the casino's money to bet with. On each continuing bet, as long as you are still winning, take half of what the dealer pays you and place on top of your bet so that it continues to grow, and keep the other half of what the dealer pays you.

To continue this example, let's assume that you win your $15 bet, you could keep $10 of the winnings and place the other $5 on top of your bet to give you a $20 bet for the next hand. Remember, at this point if you lose, you are still ahead by the $10 that you kept back, and you have a $20 bet in play.

This is a strategic betting system that works for many people on a consistent basis. If you lose your bet, start over again at $5. You will lose hands and some of these hands may become pretty big, if you continue with the system while you are having a good run. Even if you lose a $200 bet by using this system, you will still likely be way ahead and will be playing with the casino's money.

I have observed people who do not increase the amounts of their bets, because it seems silly to them to risk $10 a bet, much less $200 a bet. These people will not lose a large amount of money when playing blackjack and it is a safe method. Keep in mind though; these folks will never win large amounts of money either. Remember the phrase, "scared money does not make money"?

Don't Rely On Luck

Yes I know there are many examples that we hear of where a person just has a "feeling" that they are going to win the next hand, so he or she bets a big amount and wins. That will work on occasion, but over the long run it will fail as a strategy.

I prefer strategies that are based on odds and statistics, over ones that are based on pure luck. I like following in the footsteps of the people who win most consistently. That is why I pick strategies that any successful casino operator would be willing to teach to his own employees or family members.

It may sound like I am taking the fun out of playing blackjack, but for me, it is quite fun to win money while playing blackjack... Much more fun than losing money.

Once you master the basic strategies of play and learn all of the particular rules for where you are playing blackjack, online or offline, it is time to begin attempting to utilize betting strategies to make the most of your money.

The answer is simple - yes it is. Although some very skilled Danish players (or if I may - bonus abusers) made constantly big profits and financially devastated some smaller online casinos who had to stop giving bonuses to Danish players.

And throughout all this, fans and New York media alike responded with Derrick Coleman-like enthusiasm: whoop-de-damn doo.
