Facts about Epoxy Floor Coverings
By:Thomas MacIntosh
When concrete floors are painted with an epoxy coating we get what is known as the epoxy flooring. Also referred to as polymer seamless floors, these floorings are used as a replacement for concrete sealants. They either have a clear or colored finish. More popular in industries, epoxy flooring is also used in garages, work areas, pool decks, and even in bathrooms for elderly people.
There are quite a few benefits of having epoxy flooring. They are very durable and are resistant against slipping, staining and dust. Since people don't slip while walking on them, it is ideal for bathrooms of elderly people. The floor also looks very bright as it reflects any form of light - natural or artificial. These floors are also very easy to clean and don't involve much hassle. You can choose the color of the flooring according to what suits your taste and the environment. It can be anything from clear to silver-gray. You can also use tints of colors by mixing the specified color with a white or dark base color.
However if you are using the epoxy flooring for a bathroom make sure water flows easily and there is no standing water. Epoxy flooring doesn't work where there is standing water. Similarly it is also not the right choice for vertical, wood or metal surfaces. Otherwise they can be used for both interior and exterior flooring.
There are various kinds of epoxy floorings including self leveling quartz broadcast, troweled polymer floor systems and thin mil floor coatings.
If you have a concrete floor that has over the years undergone some rough treatment and is presently chipped and flaked and you need resurfacing then you can go for self-leveling quartz broadcast. Great for areas with high human traffic, these type of flooring however cannot be used for floors where there is high level of moisture below grade. The quartz in this kind o material is used to add color to the mixture.
For industrial applications the preferred choice is troweled polymer floor systems which are a composite of silicon aggregate and polymer.
For garages and other similar kinds of concrete floors we use thin mil floor coatings.
There is a fourth variant known as the light duty epoxy floor coverings specially made for home use. Although called 'light duty' these floors are also extremely durable and are resistant even to chemical spills like oil and gasoline.
