Every Been Run Over By A Tank?
By:Catherine Harvey
Car insurance claims come in various forms. From the plain and straightforward accident of a rear shunt to the quite bizarre.
Whole TV programmes are now dedicated to showing the stupidity of drivers on the road in the UK and abroad. One of the most famous of these was in the US when a man stole a military tank and caused havoc by driving for many miles up the freeway, plowing into other vehicles.
Fortunately, no one was hurt but this would have resulted in many car insurance claims. Just how do you explain that you were barged off the highway by a rogue tank?
On Christmas Day in the UK, a bus was stolen in Chichester, West Sussex and the driver took it for a joy ride down a narrow, residential street. Smashing into numerous cars along the way causing untold damage and a surge on car insurance claims, the bus itself was also a right off.
For those interested in the more bizarre, claims have been made for a frozen squirrel falling out of a tree and smashing a windshield, cow saliva ruining paintwork and a stray frozen kebab exiting a car and causing damage to a passing vehicle.
One motorist had the cheek to claim on his car insurance when, sick of being caught by the same speed camera, he decided to exact his revenge by persistently ramming it with his car. When it transpired the camera was stronger than his car, he then tried to claim it as an accident to recover the cost of repairing his car. It is doubtful his claim will be paid out.
'I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way' is a true statement taken from a car insurance claim, along with other idiotic statements such as 'Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don't have', 'I started to slow down but the traffic was more stationary than I thought' and 'my car was legally parked as it backed into another vehicle'.
There are often times when people just shouldn't admit the real cause of a car accident, or at least think about the wording they use very carefully. Such as the man that said he was driving at 70mph when his girlfriend reached over and grabbed his testicles or the claimant that explained the cause of his accident as happening because he was waving at the man he hit last week!
Some car insurance claims are just going to make you look like you were drunk at the time. 'An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished' was one answer on a claim form. Then there's the man that said 'The accident happened because I had one eye on the truck in front, one eye on the pedestrian and the other on the car behind'. That's just scary!
Whoever said insurance is boring obviously has not seen some of these claims. There are numerous occasions when car insurance claimants have given their insurers a good laugh. Often times, if these claims cannot be disproved, they do get paid out, probably at the complete surprise of the claimants and discomfort of insurers.
