The Art of Design

By:Adrian Barrett

Learning the principles of design can be rather intriguing. However it really is not all that difficult. Design principles are simply theoretical concepts that guide where design elements are going to be positioned. There are two major steps in the design process. The first step is a selection process. This will include what colors the artist may want to use, the types of line and shapes, the dimensions, and so on and so forth.

The second step in the design process is placing the objects where needed or rather, the organization of your piece. It is important to remember that the design process consists of both selection and organization. There are many design principles in the world today. Some of these include unity, space, rhythm, balance, and movement.

Within each and every one of these aspects there are multiple subgroups and ways to achieve the goal. For example, to create unity throughout a picture we use ideas such as continuity, variety, and similarity. All of these together make up our unified picture, which in turns makes up our composition. Do you see how this works?

The simplest way to achieve unity would be to use repetition throughout the composition. Repeating an object or shape in your picture is the most basic way of achieving a unified look. The eye tends to follow patterns. Have you ever seen a portrait or work of art that was a continuous flow or pattern? Did it not catch your eye?

All of these concepts are put into practice throughout the world in each and every field. Design is everywhere around us. There are many forms of design. Forms of design include game design, graphic design, interior design, automotive, industrial, universal, web, architectural, and so on and so forth.

A really popular and growing field of today is game design. Game design begins with a concept or some original idea. Most games are started by discussion on perhaps a favorite fantasy world or something of that nature. Then as the tasks move forward, the initial planning and organization which we just talked about, takes place. The initial design needs to be approved and then full-scale production can begin.

Game design varies from traditional design. Much more work is involved with game design. There are teams of lead artists, graphic designers, programmers, marketers, visual concept artists, voice over artists, and lots of other teams which are needed to fulfill the production. However, any form of design which takes place, follows the same basic principles. Those principles are selection and organization.
