Tips on Buying the Right Garage Door Opener
By:Thomas MacIntosh
So you have got yourself a new garage and you are looking for a new door opener. Or is it that the crime levels, and especially car theft has increased in your neighborhood recently so you want to replace your existing garage door opener with a new, more secure one.
Following is a guide we provide that should help you to buy the right garage door opener.
Let us first be clear that adjusting a torsion spring manually can be dangerous as you will have to do this with the door shut and the spring under tension. So before you start make sure that all the tools you require are with you before you start work. This is especially true for those who do not have an alternate door for entry and exit to and from the garage.
The first thing you need to decide is which mechanism of garage door you will require. There are basically three kinds of mechanisms that are available in present day garage door openers.
Chain Drives: The units that come with this mechanism are usually the most inexpensive ones with prices varying from anything between $130 and $180. But the units which use this mechanism can be noisy as the system used to lift the door is a metal chain along a metal trolley.
Screw Drives: Moderately priced at something between $150 and $250 this system lifts the garage door with the help of a threaded steel rod. The latest models come with tracks lined with plastic so that the noise is reduced and the speed of the door being opened is increased.
Belt Drives: These are the most expensive versions of all the door openers with prices starting from $170 and going up to anything around $350. They are the quietest of all door openers. It uses flexible rubber belts which reduce the vibrations considerably.
The next thing that you need to consider is the security aspect of the door openers. At the end of the day you are using a garage door for security purposes. To begin with see at what speed the door opens and closes. The quicker it does the better as you will be able to get in quicker. But also see to it that the start and stop cycle of the door opener is soft so that there is not too much of wear and tear on the body of the door. The other thing you need to consider is how it is opened. Of course it can be opened with a key and a remote. But look for the ones which come with a touch screen console and a rotating code which cannot be decoded easily. If the door opener comes with an extra vacation lock then nothing's like it.
