How Did Spyware Become a Menace?

By:John Porter

Spyware is specifically a computer program and it enters your computer system when in contact with the website that is carrying the spyware. Does this definition in any way depict that the spyware is harmful? But when you talk about spyware now, the first thing you must have heard someone making loud remarks, spyware - that menace! Why?

Reason behind creation of spyware

Spyware was from the very beginning information seeker. There is no doubt in this fact. In the trend of web marketing spyware played a very useful role since its inception. At this point you can't blame spyware of creating nuisance.

Every marketing strategy is focused on its customers. For the business growth you must have a clear-cut conception about the customer's behavior. For example why does a customer choose a particular product against another is really a matter of concern who is running the business? Running on the same track in the web market as well there is a need to understand the user's surfing habits and what are the sites a particular user regularly visit to and why.

Specifically the web business holder needed to understand that how was it's customers making in to the website and are they coming back again. If not, what are the sites they are frequently visiting? Thus there was a need for such a program that could easily and conveniently collect all these types of information and lead the website business holder a positive direction to enhance its business.

The changing role

The other side of the coin, I mean the spyware had something else in its store. When it was already established that how charismatically the spyware can gather information, some ill intended minds instantly started giving it a different kind of stature.

Trojan horse viruses that can bring damages to your computer system were now carried by the spyware to make passage in your system. Again the spyware could be hidden in the website that always came up with pop-up ads to divert your attention while you are busy at work on some interesting issue. To ignore it clicking this sign X that normally stands for cancel allowed the spyware to be downloaded in your system though you remained uninformed. But in fact the spyware was in the form of Active X that was unknown to you.

Spyware in your system can do anything to create a messy situation right from identifying your IDs, passwords, credit card numbers, secret information and what not. Spyware always was invested with the capacity to gather information but it became a menace when it entered to your private domain to disturb you very badly.
