What Do Other People Think Of You?
By:Max Ng
I used to be very concerned about what other people think of me. Especially when they think badly of me. I would get very upset if I got to know of it. This is because I felt that I tried very hard to be a 'good and obedient' boy and I deserved to be known as the 'good and obedient' boy. In fact, I did not notice that I gave so much credit to what other people think of me.
This is especially true during the early part of my life. Sometimes I did things so that I could be known as the 'good and obedient' guy. Not so much as I really like to do it from the bottom of my heart. In short I was always pretending to be not me. I still remember an incident in my late teens. I came to understand about myself when this minor incident has happened.
I was at a work place chatting to another colleague. He was telling me about some news happening at the work place. As he was also a good friend of mine, he told me that someone had been spreading bad things about me. When he told me, my supervisor happened to be around. He heard it but said nothing about it initially.
As a result of what I heard, I felt very down. Of course I lost concentration on my work for the rest of the day. My supervisor saw that I was feeling down for the whole day and decided to give me a lecture. He asked me why did I place so much emphasis on what other people think of me? He told me that as long as I have a clear conscience, I do not need to worry about what people think of me. I should just continue to do what I think is correct. And no matter what I do, there will always be someone who will be displeased with me due to one reason or another. It is impossible to please everyone in life!
This led me to recall that as a 7 years-old child, someone labeled me as 'very stupid'. If I had given in and believed that person then, I would not have made any progress and completed my degree. Luckily, I was defiant and did not believe that person then. In fact, I believe I am clever.
As a result of my supervisor's lecture, I realized that what I think of myself is more important than what others think of me. And I should always be true to myself. I need not act in certain ways to please people so that they will say good things about me. I should have a clear conscience and just do what I think is correct.
The idea that I will like to share with you:
Be true to yourself. Your opinion of yourself is what that determines your future.
