Affiliate Advantages and Disadvantages

Affiliate marketing is a term you will come across over and over again when setting up your own web site with a view to make money. Affiliate marketing in simple terms means selling someone else’s product or services on your website.
Affiliate marketing works in the following manner:
You decide to start selling someone else’s product and services on your website. In order to do this you place a simple link to the service providers’ website on your website. The service provider pays you for each sale made to a referral from your website. In this manner you become an affiliate to this particular service provider. You would see that my own website links to several affiliates in the home based business space.
There are many advantages of becoming an affiliate. It is the easiest and fastest way to make money in the home based internet business space for a newbie and a retiree like you and me. You do not have to develop your own product or service. You can simply make money by directing traffic and selling someone else product or service. You don’t need to learn about this product as you will be directing the customer to a site which will provide him or her relevant details about the product. To top it all a good affiliate program will provide you with all the help and support you will need as a newbie. They will provide you with emails, banners, text links and free e-books which you can use to promote their product as a part of their affiliate marketing program. A good affiliate marketing program will also provide you with training in techniques to promote their product on your website. Then you would have to worry only about getting traffic to your website, which you can do through up to date relevant content or a blog.
On the flip side however if you don’t choose the right affiliate marketing partner you may get duped. The partner may fold up after you have provided traffic to them and not pay you. You will also lose some revenue through broken links or emails so be prepared for this eventuality. In cases where you are selling your own product or service through an affiliate you will land up making less money than you would if you had sold through your own website. You will also have to wait for your money from affiliate and online marketing. Some affiliates may take up to three months to pay you. Make sure you read the fine print and know what the affiliate’s payments policies are before making a commitment.
So how can you leverage the advantages of affiliate marketing? How can you make money through affiliate marketing?
You can market anything from shoes to books through affiliate marketing. If you want to increase your revenues through online marketing on your website stick to a given area of interest. My own site for e.g. focuses on online marketing of home based internet business ideas. You should ideally pick up an area of interest to you and focus on finding affiliates with product or service offerings in that area. If you like reading you could focus on books. If you are a gardener you could focus on gardening equipment and tools.
The aim is to provide people coming to your site with a solution to their problem pertaining to one area of their life. The viewer needs to trust you to provide such a solution.
Even while focusing on one niche area don’t stick to only one product or service provider. Get together a group of affiliates whose products you could market. Thus, if something goes wrong with one provider you will still make revenues off the others.
Affiliate marketers will provide you with instructions on selling their products on your website. Go through these instructions and apply them. The affiliate has often spent lot of money on this research and it will only make your job easier along with providing you with greater revenues. To increase traffic to your website look at free advertising on free classified sites on the web, through safe-lists, email marketing through opt-in lists and writing informative free articles and submitting them through the various article directories. You could also blog around the subject of your choice to increase daily traffic to your website. These will increase traffic to your website and as a result increase the referrals you give your associates too. Monitor your statistics daily to find out what is working for you and what is not. Follow these simple steps and you can soon be making money through your website. If a retiree like me who is a newbie on the internet can do it, you can definitely do it.
