Colon Cleansing: What to Expect in a Colon Hydrotherapy

By:Sandra Kim Leong

The colon is part of your digestive tract. It gets easily blocked by waste, especially in those who have or have had a poor diet or gastrointestinal problems like constipation. When blocked by waste, the colon hardens over time.

Colon hydrotherapy is a treatment in which you clean out your colon and wash away the waste. This is a crucial process before the bacteria and toxins that develop there are absorbed into your blood stream.

Though there are no scientific studies to prove the direct link between colon health and specific illnesses or disease, though there is anecdotal evidence showing that people who undergo colon hydrotherapy enjoy a number of benefits. For example, constipation and the bloating caused by it can be alleviated with colon cleansing. Other health issues that have benefited from colon cleansing include:

* Indigestion and gas
* Smoking cessation
* Alcohol and drug detox
* Asthma
* Skin problems
* Allergies
* Migraines and headaches

For those of you who continue to eat red meat and indulge in the occasional (or not so occasional!) high fat foods, colon cleansing is a good way to treat the health problems associated with a poor diet. High blood pressure, heart disease, colon cancer – all of these will benefit with a regular colon cleansing program.

Colon hydrotherapy is not an uncomfortable process. You lie on your back or on your side while your hydrotherapist inserts a plastic tube into your anus. This tube is soft and disposable and does not hurt. For the colon hydrotherapy session, it will stay in place. Through it, the hydrotherapist will pump specified amounts of filtered water through this tube into your colon. The water is the same temperature as your body and may contain herbs or enzymes that enhance the purification procedure. While the water is in your colon, your hydrotherapist may massage your stomach in an effort to help your intestinal walls release the impacted waste. When it is time, the vacuum on the tube that pumped the water in will be reversed, sending the water, and with it your impacted waste, into a sealed system with no mess or smell. This will be repeated many times throughout your hour long session, using about 20 gallons of water.

The number of colon hydrotherapy sessions depends. It is recommended that everyone have a session annually, but for those with chronic health issues like fatigue, constipation, or digestion problems, then you may need multiple sessions within the span of a few weeks. Discuss your choice of colon hydrotherapy with your doctor if you wish to consider this option. Also, be sure to inform your hydrotherapist ahead of time of any ailments or other treatment programs that you are on.
