Q. I'm in the market for a new wrought iron fence for my house; however, I don't want the maintenance that comes with it. Can you recommend alternative products that will help me achieve the traditional look of ornamental fencing?

A. I agree. Wrought iron fencing is beautiful, but the required maintenance keeps many homeowners from purchasing it. Fortunately, advancements in building materials are changing all that.

When shopping for a low-maintenance fence, work with a reputable fence dealer and be sure to ask the right questions before purchasing. First, ask about which brands have proven to be the most reliable and come with solid warranties. Next, check for durability. After all, you want a fence that lasts as well as looks good. And, if you plan to use the fence as a pool surround, be sure it meets applicable pool safety codes. Finally, ask for testimonials. Speaking to another homeowner who has worked with your fence dealer and has had your chosen fence installed will help ensure your choice is the right one.
