Human Growth Hormone Risks and Benefits Require More Study

By:Jessica Deets

Human growth hormone medications have gained a lot of notoriety lately. The truth of the matter is science is still unlocking the potential of the hormone for helping under-developed children and assisting adults with a number of illnesses. It's even shown some promise in combating the aging process. But, when it comes to human growth hormone risks and benefits, the jury is largely still out.

The human growth hormone itself, when not in synthetic form, is a hormone that's created in the pituitary gland. The hormone is secreted throughout a person's entire life and plays a huge role in a child's growth and an adult's metabolism. Non-synthetic hormone, therefore, is a natural substance that is required by the body throughout the course of a person's life.

HGH has been used for quite some time to treat children who are of particularly short stature. It has proven effective, but there are concerns surrounding its use in normal children. HDH has been linked to increased cases of cancer, but scientists say more study is necessary.

There are also conflicting reports about its benefits and risks when it comes to use in children who technically are normal, but whose parents think they can use a little "boost" in the growth process. In general, it's probably not a good idea to use any form of drug or medication on a child when there isn't a just cause. A youngster that's an inch or two shorter or a bit lighter than a parent expects can still be well within the "normal" range. Why tamper with nature if a real, genuine problem isn't present?

Although the uses of HDH in normal children are in question, the agent has shown results on those who fall below the normal range in size and growth. In addition, HDH has been used successfully to combat weight loss and other wasting problems in those who have AIDS and cancer. Some bodybuilders use it to increase mass and there have been studies that indicate it may help reverse some of the effects of aging.

HGH remains an area of active study for a number of reasons. Despite some risks, it has shown promise in treating a number of illnesses. Studies have been done that show some of the cosmetic effects of aging are reversed, tissue seems to heal faster and more.

Considering the possibilities and the unknowns, the full benefits and risks of human growth hormone likely won't be know for years. In the meantime, the hormone is approved for some medical treatments and it is available in some cases over the counter in synthetic form.

The benefits of different kinds of hormone treatments may vary and time will tell what all can be cured by HGH. In the meantime, it's a good idea to seek medical advice about using HGH in small children and for adults who choose to use synthetic forms, they should be aware of the risks and lack of guarantees for success. Despite the uncertainty, however, it does appear as if HGH will prove to be a success in treating a number of serious conditions once medical science fully unlocks its potential.
