The Versatility of a Bottle
By:James Monahan
Bottles are quite fascinating. Aside from being just containers for almost everything, bottles can be used for many purposes. There are actually so many kinds of bottles that can be used for each specific purpose. There's the long neck bottle meant for wines and other drinks that has alcohol content. There are also short and stout bottles that are used for liquid storage. There are also bottles used as vials for medical purposes while some are even used in various fields of discovery.
But, among the so many types of bottles used for different purposes, one type of bottle tries to stand out from the rest—bottles used in perfumery that can considered as “collector’s item.” Just like clothes in fashion, bottled perfumes are men and women's most favorite outfit. Perfume, especially those that are encased in bottles with various shapes and sizes, appeal to these people's sense of fashion. But, more than the status symbol these perfumes in bottles give to its consumers, it provides them the confidence they need to get on with their everyday tasks. But, what is really so special about perfume and their bottles?
Aside from the fragrant water contained in exquisitely made bottles; most people are buying perfumes because the containers themselves has become their fetish. More and more people are becoming fascinated in collecting different perfume bottles because they find these extraordinary and unique. Most of these bottles are collected from various designer perfumes that boast of really unique designs and sculpture. Since designer perfumes are those that are much more expensive compared to an average perfume, the perfume makers make sure that they entice its target consumer by adding unique add-ons like beautifully crafted bottles. Since these designer bottled perfumes are created by famous designers or was inspired after a renowned celebrity or personality, it is expected that they come out with the total package: unique scent with lavish bottle encasing.
It is no wonder that designer perfume brands like Chanel, Chloe, Clinique, D&G, DKNY, Dunhill, Escada, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Hugo Boss and others are included in the list of the perfume bottle collectors because the designers themselves contributes a lot to the creative process of packaging the product.
Indeed, bottled perfumes-especially those that are branded-are definitely included in most people's list of "guilty pleasures." But since these bottles of fragrances cost more than an average individual can afford, most people no longer opt or even attempt to buy some for themselves. But, before recounting the seemingly endless reasons why some people love collect bottles of various perfumes, here's a bit history why people-especially women-cannot get enough of using these bottled fragrances.
Back in the 17th century, the use of perfume was already common to most people. During these times, they use gloves soaked in perfumes that led to the foundation of the league of gloves and perfume-makers. The use of newly-fanged trend of perfumery grew steadily because people then did not only apply fragrances on their skin but to other personal items as well. In the 18th century, perfume became more popular with the creation of unique perfume containers: usually bottles that come in different shapes and sizes.
However, the 19th century gave way to modern productions of perfume and the emergence of more creative bottles. New fragrances and styles of bottles were then created due to changing tastes. Since then, perfumery and its packaging has gone so many developments. With over 30,000 fragrances that exist in the market as of today, it can be seen that aside from the drastic changes in the scents, physical packaging through unique bottles create better impact.
