Forced Out From Our Home By Foreclosure
By:Nir Dotan
I never thought it was happen to us, but my wife and I were both laid off from a huge federal project when the government cut off its funding. We tried finding more work, but we were competing for positions with hundreds of our former co-workers, making it very difficult to find a decent job at a decent wage. We sold one of our cars and cut our budget, but we still fell behind on our mortgage payment. Boston has a very expensive housing market and our home loan just became too much to handle.
The bank forclosed on the house and we had to move to a whole new city on short notice. Neither of us knew much about residential relocation, such as how to find a good mover or look for a property in another city. We tried to remember who helped us out when we first moved to Boston, but neither of us could recall. There were such a large number of movers and so many of them claimed to be "residential relocation experts" that we did not know which of them to call or where to begin.
We got in contact with one of our friends who moved to Florida when we were laid off to see how we dealt with the move. He was really quite helpful, as he had stayed in touch with a lot of the project staff, giving us recommendations and complaints about various residential relocation companies. We shopped around for a good company, but it was very difficult to get a mover on such short notice without paying a high price premium.
I had a lot of things in a big house and we felt like we were never going to get out of the house on time. My wife read a lot of horror stories about residential relocation on the internet and, needless to say, between those warning tales and the trouble we were having getting a mover on short notice had us ready to panic.
Another former co-worker recommended a company to us who helped her and her family move out on very short notice. She was very pleased with their service, so we gave them a call. They were helpful, letting us know they could assist us at a reasonable cost, despite the immediate need.
The company let us know what we could do to help them make the move quickly and easily, such as taking an inventory of the household goods and other things we would be shipping and organizing the various kinds of stuff we owned by the type of product.
When the residential relocation company arrived, we gave them the inventory list we had made and showed them where to find everything. The workers immediately set about packing up our house and before we knew everything was in boxes, the truck was loaded and we signed off the paperwork.
They provided insurance for a minimal additional fee, but everything made it to our new apartment without a problem, even arriving a day early. It was a nerve-wracking experience being forced out of Boston by job cuts and a foreclosure, but luckily we found a company to help make it a bit less stressful.
