College Party Becomes A Deadly Power Struggle
By:Johnny Jenkins
Sometimes things beyond your control may place you in a situation where you will have to defend yourself. Even though you maybe with friends, you must be aware of your surroundings at all times. As always you must be prepared for the unexpected. Criminals love the cover of darkness. Your chance of becoming a victim of crime is 75 percent higher at night.
Carrie and Ted were sophomores in a large southeastern university. They were enjoying the college life very much. They were industrious students who appreciated the challenge and tough academic standards of the institution. Since being at the school, they had never really encountered any serious danger. There were the daily obstacles encountered by all students, but for the most part things were going great. They felt fairly safe in the college environment, especially on campus.
College was a great place to meet new friends. They met plenty. Like their friends, they were also cheerfully looking forward to becoming seniors and graduating. This college was rapidly expanding in both student body and facilities. In fact, there were construction projects in just about every corner of the campus. It was a bit inconvenient but everyone knew it was all for the best. The campus was not the only place undergoing change.
The town surrounding the college had become run down over the years. It had become overrun with lawless characters that made no real contribution to the area. Their presence made it difficult to attract new residents or business. Occasionally the problems spilled over onto the college campus.
The local government was also in the mist of a gigantic revitalizing effort. There were many ongoing projects designed to restore its luster. It was slowly becoming the great attraction that it once was. The hope was that the rebuilding would attract new opportunity and push the criminal element out.
Carrie and Ted lived in the college dormitory, so they felt pretty secure most of the time. One Friday night around midnight, Carrie and Ted were attending a local party sponsored by one of the adjacent dormitories. It was not unusual for such events to last well into the next day. Sometimes they continued for several days.
With the exception of a few showoffs, everyone seemed to be having a good time. They had music and the party area was well lit. Everyone was busily engaged in a bit of socializing. All of a sudden everything went dark and the music stopped. At first everyone thought it was some of the resident pranksters playing a joke.
Most of the students carried cell phones, which they used, as a light source. In the background they heard campus security over the public address system in a patrol car. They said there had been a construction accident. It sounded serious. They soon learned that the nighttime construction crew in the local town had accidentally cut a main power line. The word was, it would be hours before the power came back on.
Security urged everyone to make their way back to their dorm and remain there until further notified. It was after midnight but still early by college standards. Most of the students decided to hang out in the streets on campus and wait for the power to return. They used the lights from their cell phone to see. The whole thing was turning into another party.
Carrie and Ted did not like the idea of standing around in the dark. They decided to make their way back to their dormitory. As they were walking, they noticed that the all the surrounding town was dark. They wondered about all the bad things that could be happening there.
The darkness made it very difficult to navigate to a path to the dorm. As they hurried toward their dorm, they had to pass some thick hedges. When they passed, a raggedy looking man jumped out of the shadows, grabbed Carrie and placed a knife to her throat. She was terrified. He told Ted to do what he said and no one would be harmed. Ted said do not hurt her. He also asked, what do want buddy? The man said give me your wallet. Ted took it out and threw it to the ground. When the guy bent over to pick up the wallet, there was a blast of a siren. It was campus security.
The guy dropped the knife ran in the opposite direction. There was a short foot chase. The guy was apprehended a short time later. It turns out that this guy was a convicted sex offender who had wandered onto the campus from the nearby town. Carrie and Ted were shaken up, but things soon returned to normal. Nowadays, they are very cautious when walking anywhere. They are always prepared to defend themselves if necessary.

Roadside field sobriety tests (FSTs), developed at the behest of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), are commonly employed by police officers during DUI stops to determine whether a driver is under the influence of alcohol.
