Halloween Pumpkin Carvings
By:Sean Carter
Pumpkin carving is one of the most enjoyed and most looked-forward-to traditions of Halloween, as also of the entire season Autumn. Pumpkins of all shapes hit the market during this season, but you got to be a little mindful while buying pumpkins for your Halloween pumpkin carving. Pumpkins sometimes come in odd shapes which do not make good visuals after carving. So it’s better to bear in mind what you’re planning to do with the pumpkins—just eat it or use it for decorating and carving purposes !
Now Halloween pumpkin carving is as much fun as sprucing up in monstrous and spooky gears for the Halloween night. So much so that umpteen pumpkin carving contests are held all over the nation on Halloween. Kids get all gingered up to get the right tools for their Halloween pumpkin carving and make the best pumpkins ever ! The stores stock their shelves with special pumpkin carving tools too. You get the pumpkin carving tools like the Sawzall, jig-saw, scrapers, lid-cutter saws, pins etc in such Halloween pumpkin carving tool-boxes. Just get one home and get started. But one can even do without these special pumpkin carving toolkits. A sharp serrated knife, spoons, jar-lids, tracing papers, pins, tapes, ice-cream scoops would just do fine for carving out funny and freaky pumpkins for your Halloween.
Here are a few things to keep in mind while you are carving pumpkins for your Halloween decoration or just for some fun with friends and family:
Choose your pumpkins right. You’ll find green, white and orange pumpkins in the market. Get the right ones home. If you plan to carve out a mummy pumpkin, it’s best to go for white pumpkins and if a green ghoulish face is on your agenda, you’d of course pick the green ones. But orange pumpkins are the brightest and commonest for Halloween. Now, you can also visit a pumpkin farm for the purpose. Pumpkin farmers would be happy to oblige you with plump fleshy pumpkins.
Once that’s done, make sure every child is eyed on by an adult when they are carving pumpkins on Halloween and working with knives, saws and pins.
Place the pumpkins on some old newspapers or some plastic cloth to avoid messing the floor. This also secures the pumpkin from slipping and rolling while carving.
First draw the face you want to give to your pumpkin on it before you start carving out the top, eyes, nose and mouth of the pumpkin. It’s better to tape paper patterns on your pumpkin and then trace out the shape in dots with a pen. That way you’ll have the perfect spotless pumpkin face that you set out to achieve.
Cut out the top of the pumpkin with the help of an adult before setting out with your Halloween pumpkin carving at full tilt.
You can carve the pumpkins with a Sawzall, a sharp knife or cookie cutters. However, the jigsaw works best in all kinds of pumpkin carving. It gives detailed grooves and cuts with smooth edges and you’ll end up with some real chic pumpkins to steal the show !
Once the top of the pumpkin is removed, have the gooey pulp scraped out with a jar lid or ice cream scoops. A spoon also helps in the purpose.
After you are done with the pumpkin carving and taken out the soft pulp from inside, clean the pumpkin to do away with the stickiness. Properly cleaned pumpkins make the best Jack O’ Lanterns for Halloween.
You can place a candle inside the hollowed-out pumpkin to add that spooky touch to your pumpkins. This glowing Halloween Jack O’ Lanterns will surely give your front porch or doorway a total face-lift at the Halloween night.
To add to the freak of your Halloween pumpkin carving, spare some time to make fake blood and let it flow out of the pumpkins. This is great fun and easy to make too. Prepare fake blood with corn starch, corn syrup and red food coloring. Your guests are sure to get knocked out with the blood-drenched pumpkins or Jack O’ Lanterns welcoming them in big wide kooky grins.
So just get going and have a pumped up fun-time with this Halloween pumpkin carving. Set the hearts aglow with funny or freaky or wicked or wild pumpkin smiles staring at them in a festive playfulness on Halloween !
