Setting The Right Mood With Lighting
By:James Hunt
Lighting can be one of the most critical elements for conveying mood and setting the stage for a comfortable environment. When lighting a room for a particular purpose, be sure to consider the needs of the situation and the layout of the room itself. Will you be lighting a quiet dinner for two or an informal gathering of friends and family? What events are planned for the day and what rooms will be used?
Tract lighting is an excellent way to have the best, most versatile lighting for any room or space. Tract lighting allows you to focus the individual light bulbs along a track at different points in the room. Having multiple, modular, positional light is key for getting the most out of a room visually and for setting mood by playing with the light and darkness.
If you want to play with a variety of moods, it may be fun to experiment with different colored lights in varying intensities. Blue and red lights are favorites for communicating emotion and mood with a chromatic language. Blue lights can range from cool and relaxing to sinister and creepy just by playing with intensity and saturation. Red lights can convey excitement, intrigue, warmth and romance when used sparingly, but can denote a red alert when turned on full force. No matter how you use color, be sure to ask yourself what mood you are trying to convey, and make sure your choice of color helps to communicate that mood with its language of color and intensity.
Remember, dimmer is usually better, and make sure to control the light, don’t let the light control you. It is always better to layout a room first, and then decide on the proper lighting, not the other way around. Keep that in mind and you will be well on the way to successfully lighting rooms for mood and ambiance.
