The final capstone to achieving your Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is with the acceptance of your Doctoral Dissertation. This scholarly tome is the masterpiece work that will determine that you have become an expert in your field of study. Writing your doctoral dissertation is therefore of utmost importance to relay your information in a clear and understandable form.
Of the three major steps to writing your doctoral dissertation, topic choice and research as the initial key focus points. Determining a topic that is of interest to those already accomplished in your field of study will generate a better response for your work. There is no set gauge to determine if you have performed enough research to complete your dissertation. It is suggested that you have done a thorough job only when you can comfortably be ready to answer any questions your board reviewers may ask you about the subject you have done your research on.
Once you have begun the actual writing part of your doctoral dissertation you will have to come up with an effective plan for managing your time so you will be able to fit this into your daily schedule. You will need to plan it out over time so you can fit unexpected events or delays where you need to reinvestigate some facts into the overall schedule. Give yourself enough time to complete it. Do not delay until the end of your schooling before you start. Doctoral dissertation writing has been described as similar to a marathon race. It will require a goodly amount of time in several distinct stages of preparation.
Part of scheduling your time around the actual writing will include learning when you are at your creative best. This feat does vary between individuals, some being more creative in the mornings and others at night. Once you have found when works best for you, it is recommended that you schedule that time for your doctoral dissertation work. Remember this is all up to you. Self-motivation is the big key as it is yourself alone who can determine how greatly you desire your degree. Having an understanding support group of family and friends that will allow you time to do your work is a valuable asset.
Once you have completed writing your doctoral dissertation, you are still not finished. No one can be letter perfect the first time through. Let your writing sit for a week or two, then come back to it with a more objective eye and begin the proofreading stage. Not only will you be more likely to see typographical mistakes but, with the short distancing from the work, you may be able to see any weak points in the subject matter that need revision or rework. Don't stop this process until you are thoroughly satisfied that your material is presented exactly the way you want it to be.
Finally, copyright your work. Not everyone agrees that a doctoral dissertation should have such legal protections but it is your work and a copyright will solidify your claim that the work is your original effort. As a last measure of security, you should save your completed dissertation to several formats, both print and digital so that accidents do not destroy the work and make a waste of the time and effort you have put into writing a successful doctoral dissertation.
