Living With The Threat Of An Avian Pandemic

By:Kenneth Scott

Prevention is better than cure. This is one saying that all of us are aware of but normally tend if we possibly can to ignore it. It is prudent to be careful and protect oneself and the family against mishaps, especially the medical emergencies which include epidemics.

We all have heard of avian flu and it is true that it is now assuming the proportion of an epidemic, affecting thousands of people all across the world. It is in your own benefit to be ready and prepared for a situation where your family or your community find themselves facing the dangers of avian flu.

There are two aspects of protecting yourself against the avian flu. One is to ensure that you and your family are ready and able to face the dangers of this terrible disease. It involves being ready with an emergency stash that would come in handy if you and your family is faced with a threat of avian flu. The emergency stash involves stock of food, medicines, water, hygiene items, and cash and pet food in case you have a pet at home.

If you need help with putting together a the list of things that you would require, you can search for this information on the Internet. These items would mean that you could easily spend a couple of weeks staying indoors till the threat of avian flu subsides.

It is equally important to ensure that the community in which you live is also ready for facing such dangerous situations. This is most important that you safeguard your personal interest, since a safe community translates to a safe environment for your family to live in. Some communities have started running special training events to be ready in the
event of such an emergency situation due to avian flu.

Recent events like the Katrina have proven that we, as a community and a country, are all completely unprepared for such emergency situations. It is better that we learn from our mistakes now and to be much better equipped for similar situations in the future.
It always pays to be safe than sorry.

The safety of yourself and your family is in your own hands and there are many things - no matter how small -you can do to make sure you are prepared. It is wise to be prepared for the worst and look on the bright side it may never happen!
