Safeguarding and Cleaning Natural Stone

By:dror klar

It is no wonder that so many homeowners are purchasing homes that have features of natural stone. People with older homes are using this type of stone when they do remodeling. The appeal of the way nature looks is so unique and gorgeous that people can not resist it.

Even if the cost of using this material can be more expensive than other alternatives they could choose such as vinyl, laminate, or brick, the value that natural stone can add to your house is well worth the investment. It is a real selling point for the people searching for a home to buy.

The many choices of natural building material are another thing that is appealing to so many. There are many colors to pick from and not just earth or neutral tones. Red, brown, green, gold, and others color can be found as well as many unique and completely different stone patterns and textures. Granite can have a rougher feel while we all know about the cool silkiness that marble can have.

Limestone and sandstone can come in smooth buttery colors that invite relaxation and peace of mind just by looking at it, but it can come in several colors too. The rich history from where Jerusalem stone comes from makes it a very popular choice.

People like the idea of owning stone that comes from the areas that surround Jerusalem. There are many other types of natures building blocks that people choose too like flagstone and travertine. The way a stone looks and makes them feel inside is what helps them make their choice.

Many think that having natural stone in their homes might require a lot of extra care, but in reality there is not much different care involved in caring for natural stone than many other kinds of surfaces.

These stones are sealed with a protective coating to help prevent spills and stains from penetrating them. When you have vinyl or laminate surfaces, certain things can stain them too. The only real difference is what you clean them with. You do not use bleach or harsh abrasive cleaners on natural stone. Spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible.

Resealing natural stone about every five years or so is the best way to keep them in shining good condition. Protect the natural stone from very hot pots or dishes.

You would also do this with other surfaces. Just use place mats, trivots, or hot pads. Use coasters under glasses that may sweat. This is not out of the ordinary care, just common sense that you would use with any surface you want to keep in good condition.
