Protect Your Home From Rot, Termites

Spring is the time to inspect your home's exterior trim for possible damage from recent rain and snow, which can lead to problems such as wood rot and mold growth. At the same time, almost all areas of the U.S. have mild to heavy termite infestations.

Termites eat 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and cause more damage to U.S. homes than fire, floods and storms combined. In fact, a survey by the National Pest Management Association indicated about one in 10 homeowners (12 percent) has noticed termites in their neighborhood.

In the spring, homeowners should inspect exterior trim along rooflines, windows and doors and any areas that are prone to excessive moisture or come in contact with soil. A few warning signs of potential problems include cracked, peeling or blistering paint, green algae and spongy or soft wood.

If the trim is damaged beyond repair, replacement is the only solution. One option that has become a preferred choice among homebuilders and remodelers is a treated exterior composite trim called MiraTEC. This engineered wood trim is ideal for nonstructural applications, such as roofline fascia, window and door trim, corner posts and porch trim.
