Prevent Firing Family from Your Business

By:James Lowe

When starting your home based business did you make the major mistake of hiring a family member to work with you? Rarely this will work out well, but the barren truth is that it seldom is the right thing to do.

Did you have or make a written agreement about what their duties are and the consequences if they are not done? Can you impose consequences on a family member and still keep their familial love? Do not count on it no matter what or how enthusiastically they say it.

This seldom works out well. When family members you hire to work for you in building a home Internet business do not have the needed skills, experience, intensity, dedication and ethics, to work for you what then do you do to keep them as family?

Let us see now, how do we fire a family member without them and other relatives hating you?

Remember you and him or her wrote down their duties with the realization, maybe even a written contract as good as a professionally written content article per above, that this could happen. Will they remember and honor it? Do not count on it for a nanosecond.

One of the first critical things to keep in mind is whether you both are part of growing a home Internet business or well established big complex firm that firing a family member never goes any way but badly. Occasionally it ends up in court, and public newspapers, with one family member suing another. Nice huh?

We hear, read and experience such goings on in corporations almost on a daily basis. Trust me, this is dirty laundry you want to avoid. Your goal is to focus on growing from a small Internet business and not to get in litigious cat fights with brothers, mom, aunts, and cousins.

The familial firing and hiring correctly means not only keeping family peace but keeping your home private or public enterprise on the right track rails. The basic principle of hiring family members to help you as a home based entrepreneur mean that from the beginning they will be held to a higher standard than other employees.

The family war starts here. Why? Because they are family and familial relationship brings with it more personal dedication and commitment to the corporate success.

If they do not agree to be held to a higher standard do not hire them. You will seriously regret it later if you do.

If you do make the silly mistake and hire a family member and it does not work out and you have to fire them you must do it clearly and quickly. Do not drag it out because this will be terribly distracting to your business.

Be sure the fired family member is clear about details of the reasons, draft a clear and consistent statement that you give to all others involved. It is important that family, employees, vendors, and other associates affected by the termination know why it was done to keep everything under control and avoid rumors.

You do not have to sacrifice family relationships in the process of working towards your priority of building your online business. You can terminate family members without ruining relationships within your family, sometimes.

Sorry to sound bookish but the best way to accomplish this is to offer at least one verbal followed by two written warnings. Would you really want to give warnings or threats to family members you love? The next step is a documented written notice of termination.

Before writing it up as a firing, offer the familial employee a chance to resign. Possibly offer a severance package, if you can afford it, that is attractive as you can make it, or perhaps let her continue as an outside contractor or supplier.

Letting your family members walk out your enterprise door by building new bridges will save her some dignity. Sorry to say this but the best thing to do is never hire family members in the first place.

Keep in mind you are committed to building a home online or off line business. The business comes before family relationships. The primary purpose of your business is to take care of your family by making a profit.
