Special Addiction Treatment For Gays

By:John Porter

What's the basic difference between a normal drug rehabilitation center and an addiction treatment center for the gays? The crucial factor of separation is the environment or the ambience of the treatment where the gay has to be given full sexual security.

There is an interesting point to be noted along with the gay addiction treatment. In short form nowadays the entire sector is referred as the GLBT (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender) population. It has been surveyed and chalked out that there is a steep rise in this population in the past few years. And the problem of drug addiction has increased in leaps and bounds over the time. The GLBT population is no exceptional because they are also being entrapped in the addiction world at an increased rate.

Gay friendly situation

In normal rehab centers the focus of the problem is kept straight on the issue of concern. How the addicted person has to be brought to normal circumstance so that he/she can reshape the life in the new way.

The focus of the treatment of a gay addict has to be precisely determined from the position of sexual orientation. You cannot put this particular factor aside and start the counseling sessions. In many cases of gar drug addicts it has been found out that the root of the problem lies in this alternative sexual orientation. So the basis of addressing the problem has also to be accordingly.

Now there may be several other reasons as well for the gay to become a drug addict. In that case is the sexual factor less important? No. Here too the matter has to be handled quite sensitively with more caution so that the person should not feel any type of insecurity and deprivation just because of being a gay.

Problem creators

The real problem begins when the same rehab center offers treatment for a drug addict and also a gay drug addict. Here the trainers and the counselors may prove very efficient to tackle the case, but the overall environment might fail to assist the gay, the homosexual or the lesbian. These persons might not feel compatible with rest of the patients and hence an automatic barrier is created in the broader treatment perspective.

Thus whenever it's a case of giving refuge and proper treatment to a gay drug addict a completely separate arrangement is most desirable where the co-patients are also of the same sexual orientation. The sense of security holds the major importance in these cases and for gays sexual security is must.
