Using MySpace Safety - Setting Your Profile to Private
By:Steve Iser
MySpace.com has quickly become a popular way to communicate with other members, as well as meet new friends and locate old ones. Members can design a personal profile, receive and leave comments on MySpace profiles, as well as view other member profiles. However, you should always use proper online safety when using MySpace features. The following paragraphs will discuss staying safe while using MySpace, as well as how to set your own profile to private, so only your approved friends can see it.
Entering too much personal information into your MySpace profile is a mistake many members make. Too much personal information could include adding to your profile information including:
your town
your school
your last name
where you hang out
The problems with revealing too much personal information about yourself can be dangerous. If you add too much personal information to your profile, any MySpace member could locate you in real life. This is not a good thing.
To avoid any risks associated with revealing your personal information, you should take some factors in consideration. By following a few simple safety tips, you can help ensure you will have a safe, entertaining experience with MySpace.com. These tips include:
never reveal both your first and last name on your MySpace profile
avoid mentioning your specific location, or where you intend to be at a certain time
use your nickname
If you follow these tips, that does not guarantee your online safety, it only decreases your risks.
Another way to ensure your online safety while using MySpace is by setting your entire profile to private. This means that only the people you have approved as friends will be able to view your MySpace profile. Anyone who is 15 or under will receive a MySpace profile that is already set to private. Anyone under 14 is allowed to have a MySpace account per terms of service. For MySpace members over 15 years of age, there are a few simple steps you need to follow in order to set your profile to private.
First, you must make sure you are logged into your MySpace account. Once you log in, and are directed to your home page, you need to click the link labeled "Account Settings", located to the left of your MySpace photo. This will redirect you to your account settings page, where you will need to find the where it says "privacy settings" and click the red link next to it labeled "change settings". By clicking this link you will now be on the page where you will actually set your profile to private. At the very bottom of your settings box, where it says "Who can view my full profile", you will need to select "my friends only". Click the "change settings" button, and your profile will be private.
