Red Diamonds - How Many Vivid Pure Red Diamonds Are Known to Exist Today and At What Value?

By:James Greene

Red diamonds are perhaps the rarest type of gemstone which is currently in existence today. Very few individuals lay their eyes upon a red diamond which makes its uniqueness even that much more so.

Although colored diamonds in general tend to be highly sought after and due to their rareness not purchased as often as colorless diamonds, the red diamond is the absolute top of the line gemstone.

How Many Vivid Pure Red Diamonds Exist Today?

To say that this type of stone is rare is an understatement. In fact, it is claimed that less than twenty naturally red diamonds are known to exist today. This is not to say that more will not be uncovered in the future however it is likely that the number will stay around this level for quite a while.

Due to the lack of available vivid pure red diamonds, the price tag which is on each one, if the stone is even for sale, will take one's breath away.

How Much Does a Gem of This Type Cost?

Stones of this type, should they go up for sale, can cost anywhere in the millions of dollars range. The largest red diamond ever graded by the GIA Lab is a 5.11-carat stone which eventually sold for around $8 million. This stone was called the Moussaieff Red as it was purchased for this amount by Moussaieff Jewelers.

Smaller versions of these stones such as ones which are a carat or less could sell these days for $2 million or more. Considering the rareness factor associated with red diamonds, it is no wonder that these jewels cost a pretty penny to purchase if one is able to do so at all.

Where are the Red Diamonds Which Are Not For Sale?

Out of the approximately twenty or so red diamonds which exist today, only a small portion of stones are currently up for sale. As for the ones which are not available to be purchased, some are in the hands of private owners or jewelers whereas others are on display at museums, such as the Smithsonian Museum. Others have disappeared for one reason or another. Whether this elusive diamond will pop up in the future remains to be seen by the red diamond following public.

The Beauty of This Gemstone

There are many attractive factors relative to the red diamond. First, since this gem is so rare in nature, the desirability factor is even more so. Something which is harder to get is often more coveted by the masses. Secondly, the vivid pure redness of the stone presents such a picture that it is simply breathtaking. The aesthetic attributes of the red stone make it extremely desirable for diamond lovers everywhere. Lastly, the uniqueness factor also answers the question why it is so highly thought of in the gemstone genre.
