How To Preserve Vitality Through Healthy Aging

By:Reuben John

There is a common myth surrounding old age which states that it is a dull, boring time when people of frail bodies and stale minds live out their last remaining years in misery and solitude, abandoned and forgotten by their friends and loved ones.

This myth has unfortunately been actively promoted by the media and the popular culture, to the point where some have identified ageism as a new form of discrimination. This myth is of course, completely untrue and in this article, you are going to find out how you can use healthy aging to retain your vigor and vitality well into your 70s and 80s.

First and foremost, regular exercise is the key to healthy aging. Exercising grows your muscle mass and makes your bones less fragile. It also forces you into a more active lifestyle, stopping you from spending your whole days locked alone inside your house.

Personally, I found that the more time I spend at home not doing anything useful, the more reluctant I eventually become to leave the house. It is a dangerous lifestyle pattern to fall into when you're approaching senior age as you will start to lose both physical and mental vitality. Remaining physically active is the key to healthy aging.

Second, it is important to remain actively involved in social life. In almost every town, you can find events where like minded seniors gather and socialize, and it is generally recommended that you attend as many of them as you can.

The stereotypical image of a senior person is that of a lonely man who knows nothing of what goes on in the world today and can only entertain his grandchildren with war stories. Unfortunately, if you isolate yourself from social life, this stereotype may become a reality for you. This is why social life plays a big role in healthy aging and in preserving your psychological vitality.

Fulfilling romance can also contribute to healthy aging in multiple ways. Contrary to what many might think, senior people can have very successful intimate relationships, and it is very important not to isolate yourself from them.

Wrinkled and lined skin does not mean that you are no longer attractive to members of the opposite sex. A good relationship will not only help you preserve your psychological vitality but will also improve your self-esteem.

Finally, one of the most important elements of healthy aging is to remain open to new experiences. Do you have a dream that you have never been able to fulfill like maybe taking a vacation to an exotic country or traveling from one end of America to another by car?

Well, now is the time to do it. One way to cope with your retirement is to regard it has a very long vacation and, as with any good vacation, it is important to have the time of your life. Not only will you relax and have a great few weeks or months, but you will also have some new experiences to talk about. Remember that your mind and memory will become stale only if you allow them to.

As you can see, the key to using healthy aging to preserve vitality really lies in living your life to the fullest. Keep your body and mind in top-notch shape and you will never feel the burden of old age.

If anything, your retirement will become a time when you no longer have to work and can afford to spend the money you have saved up to finally enjoy what may well become some of the best years of your life. Healthy aging truly unlocks the door to an enjoyable and exciting retirement, will you make the effort to step through it?
