Why Not Become An Electrician?
By:James Copper
Electricity is a very important part of modern society as it powers the world in which we live. Electricity is needed in everyday life as a source of light, refrigeration, air conditioning, and in order to operate machines and other equipment. Therefore we need electricians in our society in order to live our lives as we know them. If you want to become an important part of society by being an electrician there are lots of opportunities out there for you.
To become an electrician it is important to have an interest in hands-on, practical jobs. You must also have the ability to learn the technical skills that are required, and have good hand-eye coordination as the job can be dangerous if not done properly or without taking the correct precautions. In your school there should be an aptitude test that you can take to see if you are suitable for this type of job and the learning that accompanies it. If you are good at mathematics and science and understand electronics then you would be good at being an electrician. As well as all these attributes it also helps in the job of an electrician if you have full move ability and are physically fit. As with most jobs these days, some employers will require a technical English comprehension skill.
To become an electrician you need a lot of patience and you need to be dedicated as it takes a lot of time and effort. A typical course can take as long as 4 years and consists of theoretical instruction (approximately 144 hours) ad practical application (approximately 2000 hours). These sessions that you will have to take part in will require you to devise electrical systems, solder, interpret blueprints, and familiarise yourself with electrical codes that are used in the profession. You will also need to do some first aid training. A course like the one detailed here is available in many schools but it is important that you find the right one for you. To find a school that has a good quality program and to avoid becoming a victim of online diploma mills, follow links provided by distinguished organisations and associations that will lead to sponsored schools and curriculum's that will give you a good education towards becoming an electrician.
You will need to continue training throughout your career. You will not be able to just complete the one long course as the job continually changes. This ongoing learning is best done by enrolling in training classes either by your own means or through your employer.
You can become an electrician in one of two areas; either maintenance or construction, however nowadays there are more electricians who are trained to have knowledge in both areas and therefore it would be better to have both in order to win over the competition when finding a job.
Once you are fully trained as an electrician you would obviously need to find a job. Most employers require you to have a license, which involves taking an exam to test your technical knowledge and how well you know the codes and theories.
