Foreskin Restoration - Why All the Fuss?

By:Brandon Kelly

Foreskin restoration can refer to a host of different methods for restoring or recreating the foreskin of the penis that was cut during circumcision so that it once again covers the glans or the head of the penis.

The term foreskin restoration is somewhat misleading because there is actually no way to successfully restore foreskin that has been cut, particularly since the lost foreskin has nerve endings, muscles and blood vessels in the original tissue that cannot be restored.

Foreskin restoration has become an increasingly accepted practice and is reported to improve sex as well as personal comfort. Some men who have undergone successful foreskin restoration report strong feelings of "being whole" and feeling more powerful sexually.

There are two kinds of foreskin restoration: non-surgical and surgical. Although there are no actual statistics, both are believed to be effective approaches and distinguished mainly by a matter of personal choice. Quite understandably, most men explore non-surgical approaches first since the idea of a knife being brought to your genital area is not exactly a very appealing thought.

Foreskin restoration has been around for centuries, according to historical artifacts and findings, particularly in its non-surgical form, while surgical foreskin restoration began in the 20th century.

A group of disgruntled circumcised men, who felt they were mutilated against their will, renewed the call for non-surgical foreskin restoration in the United States in the 1970s. At that time, neonatal circumcision in the US was quite popular (although it has been declining in recent years).

One of the most common non-surgical foreskin restoration techniques is through tissue expansion which, as the name suggests, involves the expansion of new skin and the growth of new skin cells in the glans area. This is achieved by inflating a balloon under the skin to stretch it and to allow it to grow over time. The newly-grown skin is permanent.

Other non-surgical techniques use tape, weights and elastic straps or combine tissue expansion with a traction device. Some even recommend manually stretching the skin by gently pulling or tugging on it outward from the shaft of the penis.

The advantages of non-surgical restoration are that it is relatively inexpensive, easy to perform and less mentally and psychologically distressing.

On the other hand, foreskin restoration through surgery involves taking skin from the man's penis or elsewhere in his body and grafting it onto the penis. There are now medical doctors who specialize in surgical restoration as well as numerous encouraging testimonials about its success. However, some men who have undergone the procedure report that it can be painful and can lead to complications. It is also more expensive than non-surgical foreskin restoration.

A relatively new approach to foreskin restoration is the do-it-yourself approach using devices that are available online. However, this approach is still evolving as new and better devices are regularly being introduced in the market.
