Do You Know What Kind Of Countertop Materials Serve You Best
By:dror klar
When it comes to deciding what type of material to use for a countertop, there are many options to choose from. There are materials for every taste and budget.
The least expensive material is laminate. This has been a favorite for many years in private homes and is still used extensively in rental properties. It comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns allowing the consumer to achieve the exact look that they are seeking. Laminate has some undesirable characteristics that should be mentioned.
It comes in standard sized sheets. This means that there will be seams for wider counters and when pieces have to be cut to accommodate corners. The laminate is glued to a solid surface, usually plywood. Any water that seeps under the laminate will swell the wood underneath. This will result in cracks in the laminate. Laminate is easily burned, stained, scratched, and chipped.
Ceramic tiles are another great favorite. These tiles are inexpensive and are easily installed with or without the help of a professional. Ceramic tiles come in every color, size and shape that can be imagined. The tiles can be mixed or matched for a variety of different looks. They can be used for flooring, countertops, backslashes and many other uses.
The only real undesirable feature of tile is the grout with its tendency to mildew when used in areas prone to excessive moisture, such as around sinks, showers and tubs. A little preventive maintenance, along with regular cleaning, prevents this from occurring.
Concrete is the latest innovation for use as countertops. The concrete can be dyed to match any color and provides the opportunity to truly customize a kitchen or bath. Designs can be imprinted or dyed into the surface before the concrete dries. This highly durable material can take a lot of punishment and maintain its appearance for many years.
Stainless steel is no longer just for industrial type kitchens such as those in restaurants, schools, and hospitals. This look is very fashionable and finds its way into chic lofts and homes across the country. Stainless steel is easy to maintain, withstands hot pots being set on it, and does not crack, stain or peel. It does not provide an environment that is favorable to the growth of germs or any type of mold or bacterial with normal cleaning after each use. The use of stainless steel can be quite pricy and installation should be left to a professional.
Granite was once used only by the wealthy, but in recent years the cost has been reduced and granite is appearing in more kitchen than ever before. This is a naturally occurring stone and is very beautiful for use as countertops for kitchens and baths. This material is limited in colors and the patterns are different in every slab. Granite is porous and will easily stain. Placing foods and drinks directly on the surface should be avoided and spills of any type should be cleaned immediately. Granite does not withstand heat and hot pots or other hot objects should never be placed on it. The granite should be sealed before.
