Weight Loss With Baby Steps
By:Mike Fletcher
Losing weight can be difficult. As Christians we know that the Bible says in I Corinthians 6:19-20, the Apostle Paul wrote to Christians, "Know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own? For you were bought with a price: Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God's".
We want to lose weight, but it can be overwhelming. Most of us have tried diets that work for a little while, but then you gain the weight right back faster then you lost it. The problem with diets is that they too often go against what is natural for your body. To lose weight, we need to adopt several lifestyle changes and we will soon see the weight start to come off and stay off.
Many people who are overweight skip breakfast. This is one of the worst things that you can do. A sensible breakfast will give your body the nutrients and fuel you need to start your day. When you skip breakfast, your body thinks that it is starving and your metabolism slows down and you are more likely to gain weight. Eating breakfast will increase your metabolism and give you the fuel you need to keep your energy levels up and your blood sugars more stable.
Eating several small meals a day is far better for healthy weight then eating 2 meals a day. A telling statement on this subject is that the only pro athlete who eats two meals a day is Sumo Wrestlers. Eating two meals a day encourages your body to gain weight and store fat. Eating several smaller meals a day keeps your metabolism high and your blood sugars more stable. This will encourage healthy weight; decrease your likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
Eat your fiber. A diet high in fiber is going to be much healthier then one that does not. Try and eat 35 grams of fiber a day. This will keep you feeling fuller so that you are less likely to over eat. Fiber also encourages elimination which will keep your bowels healthy and improve your digestion. Fiber also slows down the release of glucose into the bloodstream which will keep your sugars stable. High fiber diets are also great for controlling high cholesterol.
Don't forget to exercise. Being overweight can make you feel uncomfortable going to a gym. No one wants to stick out as the fatty in a gym full of fit people. The good news is that you do not have to go to a gym to get in better shape. Start out with simply going for a walk everyday. Pace yourself. You can start with a short distance and build your way up. Getting out and walking will help you to lose weight and increase your muscle tone. You will also enjoy many other health benefits which come with exercise and you will feel better from the chemicals released by your body during exercise. Be sure to see your physician before starting any new exercise program to be safe.
Set small goals. The old saying is true, inch by inch it's a sinch, yard by yard is hard. There is something powerful about writing down a goal, you are much more likely to reach it then if you just say it once and are not reminded about it.
Weight loss is possible. Don't give up. These little steps can get you in better shape and can help you feel better. You deserve it and you will enjoy the journey as you take better care of your temple.
