Investing In A Dollhouse Can Be Fun
By:Brooke Hayles
If you are of the belief that dollhouses would be interesting only to little girls, you are absolutely wrong. People belonging to all age groups (both men and women) have started indulging in this wonderful and interesting activity of dollhouse collecting and arranging.
Dollhouses are available in different budgets and people of different income groups can afford to buy accordingly. The varieties include sprawling mansions to big comfortable three room houses. Investing time and money in finding and decorating dollhouse is found to be fruitful and it has become an enjoyable activity of people during leisure time.
If you are a beginner in this hobby, you will wonder at the price of these houses as the total price of a complete (unfurnished) house will start from $300.00. Most people do purchase small playhouse kit, the cost of which is around $90.00. You can purchase a small one and can build it slowly by including miniature items to the rooms according to your choices and ideas.
People enjoy working on it and continue to enhance its beauty by adding new things till they become satisfied with its beauty. They will be searching for the mantle that would perfectly suit the fireplace and will even make a suitable one if they could not find one of their choices. Some crazy ones do also add functional lighting also to their playhouses to make it most appealing and attractive. This will present a touch of realism and will make the rooms more cozy, pretty and lively.
These small playhouses hold a 1:12 ratio. Otherwise, one inch will be equivalent to one foot. But 1:24 as well as 1:36 ratio houses are also in great demand as more effect will be present when there is less space. When getting more items in the collection, one must necessarily check pieces to find a scale that will perfectly match. A candleholder used in a house of scale 1:24 or 1:12 may look almost the same unless you view it in its original environment.
Maintaining and decorating the playhouse and searching for the suitable accessories will be very much interesting. There will not be much maintenance for the houses that are well maintained and placed in moisture free and dust free places (away from sticky little hands and other disturbances). If the house become little dull, repainting the walls will restore its beauty. If the walls of the house are covered in wallpaper, you can remove it and clean it (removing the excess adhesive) and can use a beautiful and more appealing pattern.
If you want to make a collection but do not have any idea or imagination about the house, you can review some of the classic houses (beautiful models), which will spark your imagination and ideas. This will help you to get an outline about the one which you want. An example of such beautifully designed house is the Queen Mary's Dollhouse. This house was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1924. Queen Mary's Dollhouse can be seen at the Windsor Palace (currently displayed).
Another attractive model is the Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle which you can find at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois (displayed since 1952). If you are not able to make a first-hand visit to see these houses, you can see the photographs and other documented models of the houses. You can also find it in internet or in books.
