How to Teach our Children Reading with Fun

By:Anne-Lie Karlsson

Reading begins in our children's ears. If our children are listening to us, then the can easily learn how to read. Reading and listening should work together for a better result. As parents, we have a great role to play for the success of our children in reading by talking to them, reading books and playing with our children. The more books you read to them the wider their vocabulary is. With more vocabulary it allows the children to recognize many words and language as they read some books.

Teaching our children how to read is hard but an enjoyable task, it tests our creativity and patience on teaching them. But it doesn't mean we have to spend so much time with our children laying on sofa reading with them. It's a so-boring task. In our daily routine we unconsciously teach our children on how to read - by simply talking, singing songs and in our daily conversation with them. Children listen to their parents whether their mothers and fathers are quarreling, on sweet talk moments, or giving instruction to other household companion. They are our avid listeners.

Reading a book, singing, playing word games, and simply talking to your children will increase their vocabulary while providing them listening opportunities. Children who have higher exposure to different language or dialect can learn how to read easily because it arouses their curiosity in learning other languages. Daily reading with children will help to develop them. You have to read and read to your children so that they will successfully learn how to read and also they become confident in school. It also increases their vocabulary, familiarity to other words and of course it will develop their pronunciation of words.

We are talking to our children everyday starting during our pregnancy. "No Baby Talk" that's my rule. How can they learn correct words and pronunciation if you talk to them just like a baby? Baby talk can affect the learning of your child because it loses a chance to widen their vocabulary they have also difficulty in pronouncing words properly. Of course, children always listen to our conversation sometimes they will imitate us the way we talk.

Open and read a story for child. Books are not meant to display on shelf but for reading. Some parents allow their children to scan book, even if their children don't know how to read, because you are teaching them the habit of reading. Once your children engage in reading and addicted to it don't worry its a nice addiction. Add lots of great children's books and in your library. However, parents should not in hurry that your children will read directly instead we have to enjoy every development they have while learning how to read.

When my daughter reached one year old I have to label most of the things in our house. I have to put DOLL to her doll, GLASS to her set of glass, SOFA to our sofa, CARPET to our carpet and etc... It sounds funny but it really helps my daughter to masters some common words or terminologies in our home. But of course you can't label everything especially the word like THE, WHERE, WHEN, so you have to use these words most of the time so they can be acquainted with it.

Thus, parents had a great factor in teaching their children on how to read. Hope you find this idea a little bit helpful to you as parents. Enjoy and cherish the moments you spend with you little angel.
