What Are Your Options When Locked Out Of Your Car?

By:Jim Corkern

Long gone are the days of the car door opening with a simple coat hanger that is bent with a hook on the end to un lock your car door. With todays car designs it is getting harder and harder to get into a car that you locked your keys in.

All hope is not lost. There are still a variety of tools and experts in this specialized market to cure your woes.

They still have the ever popular slim-jim on the market even though they are becoming less and less effective with the more modern designs. The internal locking mechanisms of the door are changing at break neck speed and this is on its way to making the slim-jim obsolete. The way it is designed does not allow it to hook the lock inside the door panel to lift it like it was designed to do.

The next tool is the wedge and hook. The idea behind this tool set is to place the wedge between the door frame above the window on a door and the roof frame of the car and wedge the car door away from the main roof frame, then a heavy rod with a hook on it is inserted into the gap caused by the wedge to where the lock can be pressed ot lifted to unlock the door.

The pitfall to using the wedge method is that if too much pressure is used it may bust your door window from being pried too much.

Most emergency car un-locking services use these methods to do this and can usually get to your location. At home, at the movies or the local mall. They are not the cheapest service in the world but a safe way to get your car unlocked in an emergency.

Another method on late model vehicles is to contact your local new car dealership. Most of the time this will not help if your keys are locked in your car because you have to go to the local dealership to get this done and you will need proof of ownership and a valid Id which may be hard because you probably locked your registration or title in the car, So this is not the best option.

Your local locksmith is a good option if there are not un lock companies in your area, they usually have the tools to unlock your car and have all of the proper training to handle any situation that you may run into. They cost a little more but are worth it for the peace of mind knowing that a fully certified professional is taking care of your car.
