Fine Mattress = Good Sleep

By:Jay Ashley

Ever woke up with a small crick at your back? Does turning side to side while sleeping take a whole lot of effort? Do you find your cheeks or nose sore in the mornings from sleeping on it? Feel strange pointy things poking at you?

Then a new mattress is in order.

Statistics show that 3 out of 5 adults in the US experience some sort of sleep disturbance. 1 out of three experience back pain. With this kind of combination, treatment is essential and part of it is choosing an ideal mattress to sleep on.

Whether you’re using a wooden frame or just laying it on the floor, having a comfortable mattress is top priority. The comfort and support the mattress gives is equivalent to the quality of sleep we get.

To choose the best mattress for you, you need to know that:

1. A firmness test is necessary.

Different people have varying tastes. What’s comfortably firm to one might not be for another. Therefore, the best way to see is to test it yourself. When buying your mattress, don’t be shy. Lie on it, roll around and see if you can get plenty comfy.

Get your companion or the sales person to try and insert their hand under your back. If the hand can’t get through, the mattress may be too hard for you. If it passes too easily, then it’s too soft.

2.Look for a strong support

Don’t focus too much on what you’re salesperson is saying. Just because he tells you that the mattress is supported with whats-its-name technology doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s perfect for you. That sales person doesn’t know about your chronic case of back pain or that you’ve undergone surgery due to a slipped disk.

Upon trying the mattress, see if it fits with the contours of your body. If you have back pain, does the mattress give you support at that part? Does it sag too much at your head and pelvic area?

3.Check out that width

When you’re buying a mattress, it’s understood that you need to consider the person you’re sharing it with, if there’s any. A double bed might be enough for two skinny 10 year old girls but you also need to think about their sleeping habits. Do they toss and turn too much? Do they have a tendency to roll off the bed? Then you might want to buy a wider one, like a queen sized bed.

4.Pick one of high-quality

In terms of beds and mattresses, you need not be a Scrooge and buy the cheapest unit available. Remember that this is concerned with sleeping and sleep is a vital function of the body. Without comfortable sleep, the body cannot rest and therefore the quality of life is diminished.

5.Don’t even think about buying second-hand beds!

Ugh. You might be buying it for a cheaper price, yes, but please think about the possible consequences. Aside from obtaining a lower quality bed, you might even get unwanted features like diseases, mites and lice. Cleaning does not guarantee full eradication of these elements. Do you really want to risk your health for a few dollars saved?

Again, we need to bear in mind that buying a mattress is just like buying a house. You need to think in terms of comfort, support, safety and long term use. A comfortable, high quality mattress may cost you a pretty penny but it will save you a good deal of grief later.
