Get Noticed By Thinking More Creatively

By:Cathy Warschaw

A rut is a comfortable place to be. Often, dental practices-and dental team members-can become complacent about their work and the routine. That can be dangerous, even fatal, for a practice because patients today are far more knowledgeable, discerning, and demanding. Thinking more creatively and "outside the box" will not only help you get noticed as an important member of the dental team, but can also help your entire practice distinguish itself from its competitors.

Here are top areas where you can apply your creative thinking:

Check out the competition. Take time to find out what other practices in your community are doing. If every office offers the latest in technology and procedures, then you need to find a different way to set your practice apart from the pack. "Dental spas" are a new trend, which offer traditional spa treatments along with dental services. Dental spas are designed to make the patient feel more comfortable and less apprehensive about their visit to the dentist. If your community does not have a dental spa yet, perhaps your practice could be the first one. Talk with your dentist about exploring common dental spa offerings (like manicures, pedicures, and massages) and think about which services your practice might be able to offer too. Or, perhaps you could create a spa atmosphere with offerings of fresh-baked goods, beverages, and a soothing atmosphere in the waiting area.

Expand your marketing efforts. You can find ways to promote your office without spending a lot of money on advertising. Ask your dentist about sponsoring charity events or speaking at local schools on career day. If your practice offers some of the latest procedures, contact your local newspaper or television station to let them know your dentist would be available for interviews (of course, you need to be sure he or she is willing to be a spokesperson.) Offer patients pencils, note pads and other trinkets that feature your office name and logo.

Examine current procedures and habits. There are always areas in the office where you can find areas for improvement and innovation. Is the filing system as efficient as it could be? If not, what could be done differently? Is the computer system or billing software a common source of complaints? If so, take some time to read the manual and discover functions or trouble shooting techniques that might help. Suggest updating the style of scrubs or clothes worn by the dental team, so that the practice looks current and fresh.

Thinking outside the box and offering creative ideas to stay competitive will help you-and your practice-get noticed!
