The Secret Shield of Gratitude
By:Gregory Hand
As life reveals its ups and downs, it is important to be able to face circumstance with as much fortitude and consistency as possible. One way to harness the power of life's best defense against misfortune is to deliberately face life with gratitude. This is no Pollyanna call to simply look "at the bright side of life" for its own sake, but it is an injunction based on an understanding and interpretation what some philosophers and authors have called The Law of Attraction.
The idea of the Law of Attraction is simple. You bring into your world what you invoke by your thoughts and feelings. Change your thoughts and feelings and you will invite in a whole new world into your life's circumstances. Such is the seemingly unanimous declaration of 52 internationally known teachers including noted authors Bob Proctor, Mike Dooley, Jack Canfield, Dr. Joe Fatale, Michael Bernard Beckwith and many others featured in a film called The Secret. In particular, author Lee Brower, author of the Brower Quadrant, speaks anecdotally about the power of gratitude in amplifying the potential power of the Law of Attraction.
In Brower's story, Brower used a rock as a kind of anchor to remind himself to look at his life with gratitude instead of bitterness and defeat. This use of a gratitude rock helped turn Brower's life back on course. When a friend from South African found out was visiting him he accidentally dropped his rock while pulling keys from his pocket. Bowers friend asked about Bowers rock and why he carried a rock around in his pocket all day. Brower explained to his friend from South Africa about how he used the rock to anchor gratitude into his life and that in doing so his life had changed by this simple act of remembering what he valued most in his life and being thankful and expressing gratitude daily.
Later after returning to Africa the friend's son became gravely ill and he remembered Brower's rock and called Brower to request one from Brower. The gift of Brower's gratitude rocks helped his friend sustain in a period of time in which his son's life was threatened by a rare form of hepatitis. The son soon recovered and Brower's friend came to understand that the having the power of gratitude helps to forge a shield against the many forces afoot in our world today. These are the same forces that drive men blindly against each other by rhetoric, by unethical and exploitative behavior and into the force of armed conflicts.
By expressing gratitude you can actually experience changes in your life and those people you come in contact with daily. For example, when was the last time you smiled and thanked that person who pick up your trash, or the one who cleaned your office or the one who cleared the table you just ate on. Just a few simple Thankyou's each day is all it takes to make someone's day. Showing and giving gratitude in our daily lives serves to attract gratitude back in to our lives as well. Just imagine how much better the world could be with gratitude at heart!
