Recently the Federal Bureau of Prisons released an update of their prison population, which included breakdowns of race, sex, sentences and offenses. Currently, there are 189,984 inmates in the United States federal prison system. The breakdown of the information is at times typical and yet surprising other times. Did you know that the average age of a federal inmate is 38? Federal prisons, as you might know, are located all around the United States.

2). Marines on Trial for Raping Filipino Woman
It happened back in November in the Philippines. A woman, called by the pseudonym “Nicole,” was allegedly raped by four U.S. Marines. The trial for this incident is now six weeks long, and Nicole has taken the stand. The defendants are Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith, Lance Cpl. Dominic Duplantis, Lance Cpl. Keith Silkwood and Staff Sgt. Chad Carpentier. It is alleged that Smith raped Nicole while the other three U.

3). Washington State Outlaws Online Gambling and Speech
The state of Washington has a new law that makes gambling online a Class C Felony. Those who gamble online will now be charged with the same crime as someone who possesses child pornography. Live in Washington and like to play poker? Doing so is now a crime that will land you in jail for up to 5 years. You can also be fined $10,000. Washington is setting a new precedence in the legal arena.

4). Detroit Lions 2006 Preview
It’s no surprise that the Detroit Lions had a miserable season in 2005. Over the last five seasons, 2004 was their best with six wins. In 2005, they finished 5-11, which is around average for them. Their worst season recently was in 2001 when they had just two wins. Are the Lions doomed for another season of 2-5 wins? Is there any reason for hope?
