1). Profession Of Pharmacy Under Siege by Dr. Kurt Grady
There is a battle raging in the state of Illinois regarding the dispensing of medicines designed to induce abortions. Many pharmacists object to filling these prescriptions on moral and ethical grounds. Many see this as an infringement upon the doctor - patient relationship. However, Dr. Kurt Grady of the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International offers an alternative view.

2). A Book Review & Critique of Jay Adams' Book Competent to Counsel
It wasn't until the early 1970's when I was introduced to Jay Adams that I begin to see a great distinction between generic counseling and genuine biblical counseling. I was 21 years old at the time when the pastor of our new formed church bought and read Adam's book "Competent to Counsel." My pastor raved on the significance of the book and proceeded to indoctrinate our small flock with its contents.

3). Jesus Christ: Self-Denial or Self-Esteem
If one didn’t look at the title of Dr. Tyler’s book, “Jesus Christ: Self-Denial or Self-Esteem,” they might think they were reading a book about the life of Christ instead of a refutation of the self-esteem movement. Dr. Tyler takes a different approach that’s characteristic of some of the other books on critiquing self-esteem. He doesn’t exclusively argue that the self-esteem position is defective from a humanistic psychological approach as Paul Vitz does.

4). Confessions From A Biblical Counselor
My views of counseling when I became a Christian back in the late 1960’s was the same as everyone else, i.e., if you need help, you get out the yellow pages of the telephone book, look up a counselor and make an appointment. Little or no regard was given to the type of counseling or the counselor’s credentials. It wasn’t until the early 1970’s when I was introduced to Jay Adams that I begin to see that there was a great distinction between counseling and honest to goodness biblical counseling.

5). Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation by Ronald Reagan
In 1983, President Reagan wrote an essay for the “Human Life Review” entitled, “Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation.” This brief writing of his pro-life philosophy was published in book form a year later. It was expanded to approximately to 95 pages with lengthy afterwords by Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and British essayist Malcolm Muggeridge.

6). Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)
What is CPTED? The official book definition is "the proper design and effective use of the built environment that can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime and an improvement in the quality of life." It is simply a goal to reduce opportunities for crime that may be inherent in the design of structures or in the design of neighborhoods.

7). The Neighborhood Mint
After a recent trip to Dahlonega, Georgia, I'm became obsessed with wanting to know more about the U.S. Mint that had been there and its history. To say that "The Neighborhood Mint: Dahlonega in the Age of Jackson" by Sylvia Head, Elizabeth W. Etheridge, gave me all the information I ever wanted to know would be an understatement. Their 200-page book is packed with facts, figures, stories, and bits of history that sometimes were overwhelming.

8). Competency in Counseling
There is no shortage of advice-givers in today’s society. Actually, it seems no matter where you turn, you hear someone giving advice or counsel on one issue or another. Frequently it’s hard to try and avoid those wanting to give advice. To prove my point, simply express to others a dilemma you have, and watch folks stumble over themselves to give their opinion.

9). Death of the Windsor Retaining Wall
My father asked me the other day, what question did I get most from my landscape and lawn care customers. The answer: How much does it cost and what kind of retaining wall can I install?

Customers and potential customers alike are always amazed about the high cost of landscape design. Cost may not always be about the materials used, but it is always, about the time involved in the design and installation.

10). Psychology as Religion: The Cult of Self-Worship by Paul C. Vitz
It seems everyone you meet these days is a self-proclaimed psychologist. From radio talk shows, television interviews, romance novels, weekly magazines, to cliques at work; everybody has an opinion on the latest “mental illness.” I was first introduced to practical psychology when I joined the United States Air Force in 1970. It was expected that Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) would become counselors to their subordinates.

11). Martha Peace Seeks to Change Attitudes
Author Martha Peace wrote a book some years back titled "Attitudes of a Transformed Heart." The premise of her work is Romans 12:2, i.e., be "transformed by the renewing of your mind" and not being "conformed to this world." Non-Christians and Christians alike often embrace a low view of God, and consequently a casual view of sin and Scripture. Instead of perceiving God as "Most High", they attempt to make God subservient to man by thinking of "Man (as) Most High.

12). Is Self-Esteem Contrary to Christianity
The philosophy of self-esteem is probably the most influential doctrine to arrive on the scene in Christendom's recent history. At least in my lifetime, it has had as much affect, if not even more, on evangelical Christianity than the modern tongues movement that surfaced in the late 1960's. Not only has self-esteem psychology crept into every aspect of Biblical doctrine and practice but society as well.

13). Basketball and Jesus
Our church has an organized basketball program managed and coached by Doug White (not to be confused by our pastor who also has the same name). Recently, I asked Doug why he was so passionate about the sport of basketball, and what does basketball have to do with Christianity. I thought his philosophy may be helpful to others who desire to build a church sports program.
