1). Watching TV in Spain
What about my UK TV?
If you are thinking of taking your TV with you to Spain, TV sets operating on the British system (PAL-1) won’t work. Spain uses the PAL- BG standard. However, it will work via a satellite system or by connecting the aerial to a Spanish video player, which must be connected by a SCART lead to the TV. Most expats who move to Spain, with all the best intentions of learning Spanish via the television usually end up with a whacking great dish taking up half of their terrace.
2). Spain and Your Car
Your Licence
As a member of the EU you do not need to apply for a Spanish license (as long as it is a photo-card style licence). If you do not have a license or are a non-EU citizen you must take a driving test in order to obtain a Spanish license.
Driving to Spain
There are three routes by which a vehicle can be transported from the UK to Spain:
* Portsmouth to Bilbao, with P&O Ferries * Plymouth to Santander, with Brittany Ferries.
3). Opening a Bank Account in Spain
Do I need a bank account in Spain?
If you own a property in Spain, a Spanish bank account is essential to make mortgage payments and pay bills by direct debit. You will also be given a debit card which you can use when shopping accompanied by a form of photographic idea, usually your passport or driving license if you are not resident. When shopping, you can use your UK debit and credit cards, again with ID and you will be subject to exchange rates.
4). Public Transport and Driving in Morocco
Although Morocco seems a world away from our home countries, it is able to offer comparable travel options, largely due to the influence of former French rule.
Railways
The new train station at Tangier was built by the French and, true to French repute, it is remarkably efficient, perhaps even better than back home!
Trains in Morocco are very comfortable and fairly inexpensive.
5). Being a British Pensioner in Spain
Can I claim my pension in Spain?
Yes. Whether you spend a few weeks there or live permanently in Spain, the Department for Work and pensions (DWP) will pay your pension.
How do I go about it and when do I claim?
About four months before reaching retirement age, you will receive an information pack and a claim form. If you are in the process of moving abroad and will be claiming a pension soon, it is a good idea to inform the pensions service in advance to avoid any loss of forms etc.
6). Morocco – Investment Potential is Sky Rocketing
For those of us who are a little tired of today’s mass development on the Costa del Sol, Morocco, only just across the water, could prove to be the perfect solution.
Offering respite from overcrowded roads and busy summer periods in Southern Spain, Morocco is currently supplying a demand for fresh investments within a fast growing market. Conservative estimates of 15% growth per annum for the next 5 years and double digit yields are really possible.
7). Health and Leisure in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a sunshine haven for fresh, mountain or sea air, open spaces and mineral spa treatments. For many, it is ideal location for a relaxed and healthy lifestyle.
It is no wonder that Bulgaria’s tourism figures are increasing at a level never seen before (50% in the past 4 years). Bulgaria’s recent government initiatives have invested heavily in its leisure industries and in turn they are creating some highly desirable tourist resorts.
8). Food and Drink in Morocco
Eating out is one of the big attractions of Morocco. Morocco’s traditional, elaborate haute cuisine dishes are excellent, healthy and good value for money.
It is easy to see why Robert Carrier, celebrated cook and food writer, once described Moroccan food as among the most exciting in the world.
The variety of ingredients and spices used is impressive.
9). Budgeting in Spain
Not everyone retiring or emigrating to Spain has the funds to lead a millionaire’s lifestyle in Marbella. On the contrary, many people have the intention of leading a more simple life, even along the Costas. However, unfortunately the reality is due to a lack of information and little planning, many people find that the costa living (pardon the pun) can be on par with that of back home and in some cases even more!
Planning your budget for a new life in Spain should take place before you have even left the UK.
10). Getting Planning Permission in Spain
So, you’ve conquered the buying off plan challenge and now you’re contemplating your next project. Perhaps you have thought about buying a piece of land and designing your dream home yourself, away from the coast further inland where it is said to be cheaper. If the buying off plan procedure took a bit of getting used to then getting planning permission might feel like crossing a minefield.
11). Looking for Work in Spain
Am I allowed to work in Spain?
All EU citizens have the same right to live and work in Spain as a Spaniard and do not require a work permit.
I don’t speak Spanish, what are my chances of finding work?
This can be a big barrier and will narrow your opportunities. However, non-Spanish speakers will have more success in the areas where there is a high expat population.
12). Geography of Morocco
Morocco boasts a fantastic variation in terrain and vegetation, with fertile plains near its Atlantic coast, many dramatic mountains and The Sahara Desert.
Location: Morocco is situated in northwest Africa and is separated from Spain at the northernmost tip by the narrow Straits of Gibraltar. Morocco’s land borders are with Algeria and Mauritania.
13). Coping with the limited space of an apartment
Most people who decide to move to Spain are seeking a change in lifestyle. It might involve examining priorities. Ultimately many of those priorities will be directly or indirectly associated with money. For a great deal of people the only way they will be able to at least to begin a new life in Spain, is to make some sacrifices. One of those sacrifices may be exchanging their comfy, central heated “castle” for a more basic apartment.
14). Morocco Property Buyers Guide
Morocco sits just 14 kilometers from the shores of Southern Spain and is very easily accessible. Its progressive government is making Morocco a truly viable place in which to own property.
For many, Spain’s comparatively high prices and overcrowded resorts are making exotic Morocco the ideal choice. Property in Morocco remains wonderfully cheap and ripe for investment, with property prices having trebled in the past 5 years.
15). Clothes Shopping in Spain
No need to diet!
As Northern European women we tend to be taller and larger framed than our Latin counterparts. This can sometimes prove to be problematic when clothes shopping in Spain. It can be disheartening to discover that you have gone up a couple of dress sizes since arriving in Spain.
Don’t panic, you don’t need to resort to low fat, low carb or low calorie just yet.
16). Places of Interest in Morocco
A pleasant culture shock awaits you as you arrive in Morocco. It is as culturally rich as it is geographically diverse and cannot fail to impress. Visiting some of its towns and villages and experiencing the generosity of its people will leave you hooked, as I was, by the Arabic experience.
Fez
Fez is the bustling cultural and spiritual centre of Morocco.
17). Healthcare in Spain
Becoming ill in a foreign country is a concern for everyone, especially if you cannot understand the health system or speak the language. Although, we generally take good health for granted, we need to be prepared for any unexpected health related eventuality.
Anyone who has had the misfortune of falling seriously ill in Spain will agree that medical facilities in Spain are of a very high standard.
18). Major Tourist Resorts in Morocco
For now, Morocco remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, however there are some spots on the tourist map that are particularly well served for visitors.
Agadir: Morocco’s Number 1 Tourist Resort
Situated towards the south of Morocco on the Atlantic coast, Agadir boasts 9 Km of superb white sandy beach and all the amenities of a modern seaside resort.
19). Festivals and Traditions in Bulgaria
Ancient Bulgarian culture has paved the way for traditional festivals and customs which remain very much alive today.
Bulgaria was the Slav land of Orpheus and Spartacus. It holds countless treasures, burial tombs and magnificent art and frescos reminiscent of centuries past, offering visitors the opportunity to tour numerous museums and monuments to understand Bulgaria’s rich cultural heritage.
20). Property Management in Spain
Whether a newcomer to property investment in Spain, or an experienced semi-residential property owner, you will have seen advertisements for plenty of private companies and individuals offering a property management service of some description. But who needs it?
The services offered by property management companies vary widely. Some specialize in finding you holiday and longer term tenants, while others concentrate solely on the care of you and your property.
21). Language Exchange in Spain
Have you thought about a swap to improve your Spanish? No I am not suggesting you throw your car keys in the middle of your Spanish neighbour’s lounge and exchange your Janet for a Maria. What I am suggesting is find some Spanish people on your urbanisation and arrange a language exchange.
Who wants to swap with me?
From my own experience, it seems that for every one British person who wants to learn Spanish, there are at least ten Spanish people who want to learn English.
