1). Mr Lear's Dream - Hopefully A Dream to Come True By : awallad
I have known L E Lear for over 40 years. At my high school reunion on October 8, 2005 I noticed he was missing from the event. He was working on his dream. I will get to that in a little while. I wanted to see him so I sought out Harold Knox, a mutual friend, at the reunion to see if I could get L E’s phone number. Success was at hand. L E and Harold still see each other.

2). Great Baseball Quotes By : awallad
I love what prominent baseball people have to say about the great ballplayers. They seem to eloquently capture what we are thinking. "It was his solemn duty to catch a ball that wasn't in the stands." - Monte Irvin (Newark Eagles OF, May 6, 1981), on Willie Mays
"Maybe they should see if his body is corked." - Howard 'Hojo' Johnson (NY Mets), on Bo Jackson, from Sports Illustrated, October 19, 1986
"When he took BP everybody would kind of stop what they were doing and watch.

3). What A Great Night By : awallad
The Time Machine brings me back to Chancellor Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, circa 1964. Vintage cars like the ’62 Oldsmobile Spitfire, 1957 and 1958 Chevy’s roamed up and down the street passing The Bunny Hop, The Burgerama and Dave’s Hot Dog Haven. Did we only eat French fries, hot dogs and hamburgers? I think so.
On May 19th, 2005 I had the pleasure of attending the Sunday morning group of boys that used to frequent Chancellor Avenue.

6). My Top Ten Favorite Baseball Movies By : awallad
My top ten baseball movies consist of five movies on the list. That sounds pretty weird. There have been many movies with a baseball theme that I have liked, but there are only five I have loved. I will get to them soon.
Some of the ones I have liked are “Bull Durham” with Kevin Costner, a light hearted tale about a minor league season in North Carolina and the characters on and around that team.

9). My Office - Behind The Pate. By : awallad
I loved catching - I had the whole game in front of me. I could see everything. Placing the fielders was my job. Seeing whether long fly balls were fair or foul. What the pitcher had or lacked, I saw, as well. Did the pitcher need a break in the action because he was tired? If he did I would pay a little visit to the mound. The general on the field is what I was.

Hank Aaron – Hitting 715 Home Runs – Okay 755 Home Runs
What must it have been like to chase a legend? Babe Ruth’s record of 714 lifetime homers was a record I never thought would be passed. I read and heard on television what it was like when Hank approached Babe’s magic number of 714 lifetime round trippers.

12). Making All City By : awallad
Toward the end of my junior year at Weequahic High School in Newark New Jersey, I started hearing from my friends that I was going to make All City. How did they know I asked myself? In my usual mood of high esteem I was thinking that there was no way I would make the all city team. “Vailburg’s catcher was better than me” is what crossed my mind. I make the grade – No way.

13). World Series Teams By : awallad
Some teams get to the World Series and you know that they are going to win it all. Like the 1927, and 1961 Yankees. The Red Sox of 2004 and the Reds from the Big Red Machine days are a few other teams where I felt that their destiny was secure before the series started. Some teams are so strong that they win four games to none. The Yankees have done it seven times.

14). The Pre Bat Warm Up By : awallad
Did you ever notice what some of these ballplayers do before they get in to bat against live pitching? Some of these warm-ups can be interesting. Comical might be a better description. These baseball players always seem to do the exact same things when they are warming up to bat, for every at bat.
Like Derek Jeter’s ritual. He gets in to the batters' box and then raises his right hand back toward the home plate umpire requesting some extra time to get set to hit.

16). I Must Get The Newspaper By : awallad
Every day when I wake up one of the first items that creeps into my head is getting the newspaper. I have got to get the paper. I have operated this way for over 40 years. The paper gets me in the know. More so than the internet I guess it might be because I can touch it or feel it. Or once I have it I do not have to wait for any uploading or downloading or sideloading (hey a new word) of information.

20). My Prized Piece of Baseball Memorabilia By : awallad
Back in the day ...
I used to deal in baseball cards, and some memorabilia in the mid to late 1980's. Through an old client I had the opportunity to sell a very rare piece of baseball lore. The piece that I was fondest of was a rare document signed by Harry Wright. A founding father of the game. The document was a contract of some player that was signed by Harry Wright, the manager, circa 1870.

21). Mister Runs Batted In Lou Gehrig By : awallad
The production company called Lou Gehrig was a thriving business in the late 1920's and throughout the 1930's. No man had more of impact for me of driving home runs than Lou. Production is what Lou was all about. He had seven years where his business surpassed 150 RBIs in that year. A record for most times knocking in 150 or more runs in a year. And his RBIs per game is still the highest percentage in major league history at .
