This World Cup, ""Dida"", 33-years-old, will be out to prove that Brazil can also produce great goalkeepers, besides fantastic attacking players. Having earned a regular spot in the national team following great performances with Italian giants, AC Milan, Dida has since established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. A substitute in the last World Cup, Dida is reputed for saving penalties after his blazing performance during a shoot-out in the 2003 Champions League final between Juventus and AC Milan.

2). World Cup Goalkeepers - Jean-Jacques Tizie By : Keith MacLean
Jean-Jacques Tizié started his career as a handball goalkeeper. But he later developed interest in football and started playing for local clubs. Among the major clubs that he played for were Lazer FC, Africa Sport and Stade d'Abidjan. In 2001, he moved to Espérance in Tunisia, and has been their goalkeeper ever since. The 1.83 meters tall Tizie, who was born in 1972, has also been keeping the goal for his country Ivory Coast.

Born in Essen, Germany in 1969, Jens Lehmann’s soccer career kicked off in 1989 with FC Schalke where he played for almost 10 years before moving on to AC Milan in 1998. Said to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Lehmann created a name for himself while with Schalke. However, after signing up with Milan, his performance took a dip and he was dropped from the squad after just five matches.

Stipe Pletikosa is a Croatian goalkeeper who donned his country's jersey at the tender age of 20. It was a debut that won both applause as well as brickbats for the young lad. The praise came for his quick reflexes and for the speed with each Pletikosa moved in front of the goal line; the criticism was directed at his inability to handle high balls, despite a 193 cm frame.

5). World Cup Goalkeepers - Gianluggi Buffon By : Keith MacLean
Born in Jan 28, 1978, Gianluggi Buffon is Italy’s number 1 goalkeeper and considered by many to be among the current top five soccer goalkeepers in the world. Gianluggi, better known as ‘Gigi’, has the distinction of being the most expensive goalkeeper in soccer history. He was transferred from Parma to Juventus for a record fee of £33 million, which is the highest amount paid ever for a goalkeeper.

6). World Cup Goalkeepers - Fabien Barthez By : Keith MacLean
Famous for his bald head, the son of a famous rugby player, 34-year-old Fabien Barthez is technically an excellent soccer player who could possibly have also made a career in an outfield position. Considered the top goalkeeper in France, he lost his place to Lyon's Gregory Coupet after being banned for eight months (April-October 2005) for spitting at a referee.

Dragoslav Jevric played his debut match for Serbia & Montenegro against Mexico in 2002 at the age of 28 years. But it was in the qualifying matches for World Cup 2006 that he made his name. Of the ten matches in which Jevric kept the goal, Serbia & Montenegro did not concede even one goal in nine matches. Much of the credit for this accrued to Jevric.

Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi is a Japanese goalkeeper known for his cheerful on field and off field behavior. He broke into the Japanese national football team quite early, and was hailed as a hero in his country's one-nil victory over Brazil in Olympics. He is known for his big-match temperament, and has saved many goals under crunch situations. Kawaguchi took to professional football soon after finishing high school.

Paul Robinson was born in Hull, England and graduated from the Leeds United soccer academy. Having proven himself to be a very confident and agile shot stopper, 27-year-old Paul Robinson has since matured into one of Europe’s leading keepers. He worked hard to edge David James as the number one goalkeeper in England a few years ago. He played a key role in England’s World Cup qualification and will be donning the Number 1 jersey when his team begin their challenge next month.

Zeljko Kalac is an Australian goalkeeper of Croatian descent who made his international debut in 1992. Since then he has played in over 50 international games, his most celebrated stint being with AC Milan. Known as the Spider on account of his two meter plus frame and flailing arms, Kalac started his career with Sydney United. He later moved to Leicester in Europe but it was not an eventful sojourn.
