St. Hilarion Castle, in North Cyprus not far from Girne, was built on Byzantine foundations by the Crusading Lusignan dynasty. Richard the Lionheart gave Cyprus to Hugh Lusignan. King Peter I, who ruled from 1359 to 1369, was his descendant. Eleanor of Aragon was Peter's wife. Melusine d’Ibelin was a noble lady in waiting to the queen, and she will give you an "nsider's" tour of the castle.

As you tour Enkomi, near Famagusta in North Cyprus, you might imagine you are a copper merchant during the city’s heyday between 1300 and 1100 B.C. Your city is now only about 500 years old.

4). North Cyprus Alter at Pighades By : Jessica I. Jones
The Bronze Age sanctuary at Pigadhes dates back to about 1600 B.C. But we are “visiting” it at about 1300 B.C. At that time the eastern Mediterranean was being attacked by a confederation known as “People of the Sea.” They conquered North Africa, Crete, Asia Minor, and the Levant each in their turn. The Egyptians called that tribe Peleset; the Bible calls them Philistines.

7). A Photographer's Dream By : John Richards
A location bathed in Mediterranean sunlight all year round? Where friendly locals vastly outnumber tourists and where the only high-rise development is the mountain range sheltering the cost-line? Well, I’ve been there, and so can you. Northern Cyprus. Mostly neglected in favour of its highly commercialised neighbour to the south, the northern part of the island has always been thought of as difficult to access and therefore attracts a mere fraction of the tourists that flock to Cyprus.

8). Vrysi, North Cyprus in History By : Jessica I. Jones
A few miles east of Girne in North Cyprus, on the seashore, lies the Neolithic site of Vrysi. Archaeologists have examined a small part of the site, and left some of the house walls exposed. The sea has undercut the promontory on which the village stood, and the whole area will fall into the sea before long. Visitors may look at the site and walk around its edges, but may not enter it, lest they disturb this fragile place.
