    Despite being widely ripped as the worst division in baseball in 2005, one facet of the division last year on which everyone agreed was the competitiveness, as nearly every team had a chance to win the division late in the season. Once again, no one is out of it in this division in 2006, as every team sits within three games of the others as of this writing.

    Form held in the standings over the past month in the AL West as each team looked to make a move before heading into the “Dog Days” of summer. Overall, the divisional race remains extremely tight, as the distance between the first and last-place teams is only 5.5 games. A hot or cold streak here or there could really shake things up, and as of now, this division is simply too close to call.

    Well, we’re looking like geniuses based on our last report on this division. It’s still more than the traditional two-horse race, as the Red Sox and Yankees have a party-crasher still hanging on to hopes of a division title in the form of the Toronto Blue Jays. Although the standings are the same as last month, there have been more than a few twists and turns since we last visited the AL East, and it still looks like any of the top three teams could emerge as the champ come October.

    Most baseball fans thought that this year would be like any other in the AL East - a two-horse race between the reigning super powers in the division, the Yankees and the Red Sox. However, as we approach June, one team is hanging in right with the two favorites and the other two are not out of it yet. This is partially due to the Yankees and Red Sox having somewhat disappointing seasons so far, but regardless, the race could be interesting all the way into October.

    It’s been quite a month in the NL East. What looked like a competitive race during our last review has become a runaway at the top and a surprising look from the bottom. The Mets have been on fire lately, and it appears that the Braves’ incredible streak of postseason appearances could be coming to an end. New York Mets Currently: The Mets are surging, and are pushing their division lead towards double digits.

    Form is beginning to take hold in the NL Central, as the Cincinnati Reds have come back to the pack and the St. Louis Cardinals have assumed their customary position atop the division standings. The Astros recently made a big splash, and things could still be very interesting before the season ends. St. Louis Cardinals Currently: Although the Cardinals haven’t been spectacular in their last 20 games, they have been solid, posting a 13-7 record.

    There was quite a shakeup in the NL West over the past month, but the fact remains that the division is still completely up for grabs. Only five games separate first place from last. It appears that it’s going to come down to who gets hot at the right time to make a push for the postseason. San Diego Padres Currently: The Padres stormed to the top of the standings over the past month after being stuck in the middle of the standings throughout the majority of the season.

Every team is lumped together in the standings, as the separation between first and last place as of this writing is only 5.5 games. None of the teams have been extremely hot lately, and everyone sits near .500 for the season. As of now, this race is way too early to call, and this will probably be the case throughout the season.

    There’s been quite a shakeup in the NL West over the past month, as a couple of teams have caught fire and others have really suffered. The Rockies were in first place just a month ago, and now they’re looking up at the rest of the division. Although the teams are still relatively close to each other in the standings, we could be seeing form taking hold.

    The NL East is shaping up to be a three-team race, with the Atlanta Braves jumping back into the foray with a recent hot streak. The Mets, Phillies and Braves are all relatively close to each other, and the tension in the division surrounds the possibility that the Braves’ incredible string of postseason appearances ending in 2006. New York Mets Currently: The Mets are a star-studded roster filled with household names, but the BA leader is young and unheralded 3B David Wright.

  • 15). Divisional Outlook For July - Al West  By : Jay Nault
    Although there was a shakeup at the top of the AL West standings during the past 30 days, this is a race that may be too close to call up until and including the final days of the 2006 season. Only four games separate first place from last, and none of the AL West teams have put together that “big streak” and sustained it. Oakland A’s Currently: The A’s took over the top spot in the division during the past few weeks, going 17-10 in the past 30 days.
